Does anyone know how long it takes for Pyrantel Pamoate to get rid of roundworms? Also, would a 6 pound cat get 54 mg?

I gave this to my cat in her food and she vomited within 1 hour. About two hours later I gave her a prescription medicine for the first time and immediately afterwards she had diarrhea. I called the vet and the one treating her is out for the day. The assistant spoke to the other vet and told me to continue with the prescription medicine, because it couldn't have worked that fast and cause diarrhea.

They never answered my question about if the dewormer caused the vomiting and diarrhea. The regular vet is supposed to call me tomorrow so I'll ask again then. Can Pyrantel Pamoate cause vomiting and diarrhea? And since the cat vomited within an hour of taking it, does that mean it didn't have any affect at all on any potential roundworms?

Could you please tell me why I should consult the ER vet? They're not open right now. They don't open until late evening.

That sounds like a lot to me... I'm seeing dose as being closer to a general 3mg per pound (specifically 2.25-5mg depending on age). You gave 9mg per pound at who knows what concentration (since you did not share that).

You are very lucky that she vomited as it might help a little, but I suggest you get her in to see a vet ASAP, any vet, since this is possibly an overdose and could have long term effects.

I was told years ago (by a veterinarian) to use liquid Pyrantel Pamoate at 9 mg/lb. So 9 mg of Pyrantel x a 6 lb. cat = 54 mg. I even have two books written by veterinarians who also say 9 mg/lb. So I think 54 mg was the correct dosage.

The only thing I can think of that would be the problem is that 54 mg of this particular dewormer is a little over 4 tsp. So maybe that was just too much liquid for her, and I did put it in her canned food.

Maybe for a weaker concentration of it? But do try looking it up. I wasn't making up the 2.25-5mg per pound dosage.

I strongly suggest that if your cat makes it through with will no more ill effects that you leave deworming to a vet.

I don't mean to be rude, but I stated in my previous post that a veterinarian is the one who told me how much to give.
She also told me the types and names of OTC products I could use.

Drontal (the prescription tablet) contains 72.6 mg of Pyrantel Pamoate. A 6 pound cat would get 1 pill which is 72.6 mg. I gave my 6 pound cat 54 mg.

I just read that Pyrantel Pamoate is supposed to be really safe.

I found this on Drugs.com - "Cats treated with 10 times the highest recommended DrontalÂ[emoji]174[/emoji] Tablet dosage during safety studies showed signs of vomition and salivation without other adverse effects. Eighty-three of 85 cats treated with the recommended dosages of DrontalÂ[emoji]174[/emoji] Tablets in a clinical field study did not exhibit any drug related side effects. A temporary loss of appetite was reported for one cat and transient loose stools were observed in a second cat. "

Another website says this, "Toxicity: Cats: 100 mg/kg daily for 3 days produced no side effects, a single dose of 230.6 mg/kg produced vomiting and diarrhea in 2/92 cats."

So can anyone answer my original question? Since my cat vomited shortly after ingesting the Pyrantel, does that mean it will have no affect on worms?

I am not a vet. Neither are the other posters. You need to ask a vet, but I would think puking up her stomach contents or even some of it if the pill had disolved would impact its efficacy. She may also be sensitive to the med.

When roundworms showed up in my household cat population, my vet gave me Strongid. Gave it to SEVEN cats - done by weight with an oral syringe - no vomiting and a little diarrhea, which was expected. But not bad at all. A couple of the cats even liked the taste and were licking the syringe. Also very safe and effective. My vet likes this better than Drontal for roundworms and some other nasty squirmy things in a cat's GI tract. I don't think it works on tapeworms, tho'. There is also Panacur... which is off label for cats but many vets use it. I was given it for a cat thoght to have giardia. Turns out he had IBD and a largely grain free diet cured that.

How soon after did she vomit? If it was more than 30 minutes afterward she probably absorbed most of it. If it was less than that maybe not. Was her vomit the same color as the de-wormer?
