Hi all...Quick background: we adopted Daisy in Sept/08 from a local cat rescue. She was 5 months old. She checked out fine at the vet at that time, but was carrying "something" as Manytoes promptly became quite ill. After lots of testing of everyone, nothing "really scary" came back negative, so it was decided Manytoes' problem was only coincidental with the arrival of Daisy. Daisy had some mild gingivitis at the time, but the vet was not concerned. Fast forward to last summer, she decides to eat a wasp ang gets stung in her mouth, so off to the vet. She has some decent gingivits this time, so the vet and I start discussions. Blahblahblah etc., after antibiotics, teeth brushing, and special food (RC Oral Sensitive), all seemed well. I should mention this cat has alway had a healthy appetite, and no aversions to having her face/mouth pet or inspected. Fast forward to now. She was supposed to go to the vet this week for her regular check up and shots. *but* last weekend, she had cried out (which is very unusual, she is a relatively quiet girl) and jumped in pain randomly, so we took her to the vet to see what she may have gotten into. Turns out it is her mouth - she does not just have gingivitis, she has stomatitis, and one tooth is really bad - it almost has an exposed root
So, I have some blood tests done to rule out a number of other things, and again reconfirm that she is FIV and FeLV negative, get antibiotics and pain killers, and am sent on my way pending blood test results (which all come back ideal). .

Shes booked in for a dental and at least one extraction for this Friday....if all her teeth get pulled, its going to cost about $2000, my low-end quote (for the dental + 1 extraction) is $770. *sigh* I dont really have all that money, but $ isnt really the issue - Im lucky enough to have a Visa that can take what my savings cant...BUT Im hesitant to remove all her teeth this early - she is only 2, and has never had any issues with eating etc., and only the one tooth "obviously" needs to go....the other MAJOR issue is that I have an uncancellable trip across the country booked for June 9th-20th (my partner will be home until the 12th), so I dont want Daisy to be "recovering from surgery" at this time. My vet seemed very convinced that with the dental and single extraction a week is more than enough time to be comfortable that Daisy is "all right" but Im not convinced with a full extraction that this is the case. So....how long does it take for the cat to be "ok" after extractions (would love responses for single, partial and total extractions if you have any)? What other options do I have? I dont want to cancel the Friday cleaning and extraction as doing so will probably mean I have to keep her on painkillers (and/or she might stop eating) until after the 21st which seems way too long...

I'm very quick to jump & say to remove all her teeth - however that is a purr-sonal decision. There have been several threads on this lately (on teeth removal/dental issues), and many members said that even if they didn't pull all the teeth, they ultimately ended up doing consequent dentals & removing all the teeth at a later date.

I opted to just pull all of Twitch's teeth, as well as Cow's, Tab's & Fafeena's. (In Fafeena's & Tabitha's case it was partly age - Twitch & Cow had dental issues)

So, in your experience, what is the healing time needed here? Can I remove all her teeth before I go away or do I/should I wait until after we return -- issue of course being length of time on painkillers/difficulty in "trusting" cat sitter to monitor her "enough"/administer meds properly without costing a real fortune etc....

ETA: I should mention that my partner is very opposed to tooth removal unless *absolutely* a must whereas I am on the prophylactic side of the fence and would remove all, so the end decision will be some kind of compromise, and Im more concerned about length of recovery!
