Does anyone have experience with teaching their dog to leave their kittens alone? Quinn, my terrier mutt, is a little over a year. She LOVES the kittens. She wants to play with them, chase them, and lick them. The kitties aren't so fond of the idea, and run away, but won't claw her (which she needs!!). I worry, because Quinn's idea of playing is to smack them with her paw, which rolls them, and worries me. The more you tell her to leave them be, the more excited she gets!
For now, the kittens are in the bedroom, and the dog isn't allowed in there. Does anyone have ideas on how to get her to play gently with the kitties?

Does she has a "pre-warning" signal before she gets rough with them - like a whimper, or change in her face, anything? Sometimes you get lucky & can stop them before they do anything too rough.

Well, whenever she even sees them she is after them to play. She chases, paws, etc. She isn't doing it in an aggressive manner, it is completely playful- but dangerous to kittens! Any time she is near them, heading in their direction, etc.. she is going to do it. I have a spray bottle, and she gets it when she goes after them, but I have to be there to watch. I am hoping to find a way that she can be in the same room with them, with out me watching like a hawk!

If I am holding the kitten and she comes over, she will give the kitten kisses, but if they move, she wants after them. I am hoping Ringo will just claw her soon, and she will back off (she is a chicken!) but right now they just run away.

I would start taking her in the room on leash all the time only & watch her like a hawk. If you correct her enough she should learn eventually. That said - some terriers can never resist the "small & furry". My Lab/GSP cannot resist a kitten if it starts running.

I bring her in as much as I can, though normally she is loose. She listens rather well, and I have my spray bottle as back up, lol. The bedroom also has lots of places the kittens can go that she can't...though that might just be enticing her to find them! I'm hoping with time she will lose interest...but I doubt it.
