I am planting impatiens along the house under the front windows. This year I want them to grow into mounds. I have 48 so I want 3 mounds of 16 in each.

I know it can be done, because I see houses with these profuse mounds of them, like big mushrooms.

Anyone have any tips on getting them to grow so beautifully. They grow very well for me, but there must be more that is being done when I see some of these houses with huge mounds of them.

Thanks.

How close together are you planting them? I think if you plant them about 4-6 inches apart they will grow into a mound.

I believe they do like shade or partial shade the best. I'm not real good with plants - I like to plant them and not have to worry about digging them up. We have some bulbs to plant later this afternoon.

All our veggies are planted now and the lettuce and beans are already coming up. The tomatoes/peppers were planted before we went to the Eau Clair show this past weekend.

I plan to plant them 2 or three inches apart. I dug holes with beautiful dirt about the size of large platters.

We have so much shade around our house...
Although on a day like today, 88 degrees maybe, it's very nice!! But I can't grow any sunny flowers unless it's away from the house area. And the ground isn't as nice.

I have always planted them, but never a whole bunch in the same hole.

We shall see.....

Thanks guys!!
I love vegetable gardens and would love to have one. You are so lucky!

If you've bought the Elfin variety of impatiens I don't think you'll get the mounding effect that you want. To get the kind of shape you're after, you may want to start with mounding the dirt. I'd plant them about 3 inches apart. Good luck!

Two to three inches is way to close together. Most recommend 9" but I planted a couple of flats (72 plants per flat) and I put them 6" apart.

As stated above don't get the elfin ones they stay to small to the ground.

Make sure you fertilze every 10-14 days unless you used a slow release fertilizer when planting.

Let me know if you need any more info!
