My wife is really concerned with the health of our cat. Since she got him I have been demoted in her affections. For instance, if I'm too hot she complains if I put the air con on ue to the electricity bills. However, if the cat comes in she puts it on saying 'he'll be too hot without it'

Anyway, back to the cat. He's 4 months old and usually likes to play a lot and he eats like a horse. My wife COOKS(!) him fresh fish/chicken/pork along with whiskas and cat biscuits.

However, for the last 2 days he has hardly eaten (or drank). He still purrs when stroked an still wants to go outside now and again.

We took him to the vet today and the vet said he doesn't think there is anything wrong with him. He reckons he's just getting to that age where he wants to mate and is off his food for this reason. He does make some odd meowing/howling noises since last week. Two or three times he has vomited a clear liquid (just a little amount each time)

I should point out we live just outside Bangkok, Thailand and it's very hot here. The average daily temperature is around 30 degrees celcius all year round. The last few weeks its been around 35 to 40 degrees celcius. He is sandy coloured and does go out during the day but only for short periods normally. He is one of those cats who loves to play outside with other cats in our quiet soi (street). We could stop him but he'd destroy our door trying to get out and drive us crazy with his meowing/howling!

Reason I ask is I'm not sure I trust the vet. He checked the cat's temperature/heartbeat/ears/mouth/abdomen but basically said that our cat has 'got the horn!'

He hasn't been neutered yet but the vet says to bring him back when he's feeling better for this and any jabs he'll need.

Should I take him elsewhere or could the vet be correct about our cat just being a bit 'frisky'.

Personally... I wouldn't let a kitten out alone unsupervised. 4 months is rather young. Nor do I think he should be out unneutered or vaccinated as he is more likely to pick up disease this way through fighting/being attacked or trying to breed.

I agree that your vet doesn't seem that great.
Is there another you could try?

Without having him inside where you can keep an eye on him right now, you don't know what he's doing. He could be eating at a neighbors, he's likely digging in people's trash if it's set out for pick up (all cats, those with homes and strays will trash dig) - he could be getting into any number of things he shouldn't.

He needs neutered asap, and please don't let him out because if he's feeling frisky then he's at the age when he can make babies, and theres enough unwanted kittens in the world as it is

If he really is only 4 months old, he's not likely feeling his oats just yet. They're usually around 6-9 months for that. Not eating is serious in cats.....just a couple days without food can wreck a cat's liver (can be only 24 hours for older, overweight cats!). And I don't think most toms usually go off their feed too badly even in the middle of mating season.

It's possible he's eating at the neighbor's or from the trash. Try to keep him in for a couple of days to make sure he's not eating anything that will make him sicker. If he still doesn't eat he really needs to be forcefed or he may not make it.

Try mashing up some chicken livers and serve them warm. If that doesn't get his attention he probably is quite ill.

boys can start getting the urges at 4 months, they are not often capable or big enough to actually get into the right position though. Are you sure of his age? The yowling is a sign of wanting to get out and mate.

Working boys do go off their food while mating, if he is capable of mating that could be the reason.

Keep him inside, at least until vaccinated and neutered if not forever. I wouldn't vaccinate and neuter on the same day but if there is no option at least both procedures would be done.

I do find my cats slow down on food when we have extended temperatures over 38 degrees.

According to my wife the vet did say he's older than 4 months. He reckons he's about 5 months old.

We haven't had him long and we were told to bring him next week if he's feeling ok for 'the snip' and his jabs. We 'think' he's already had his jabs but the vet will check next week. He was a rescue cat from a buddhist monastry. Apparently, they usually give the jabs but we need to make sure.

I agree on the keep him inside stuff but man...it has to be seen to be believed. He goes completey crazy trying to get out. It's easier than it sounds.

I don't know if it's the type of cats you see a lot in Thailand (stumpy tail, very big ears and aqua blue eyes) or what, but he's pretty wild as well as very affectionate (10 times more affectionate and 10 times more crazy than family cats back in the UK). If he wants to go out he'll make your life hell until he gets his way.

Good news though, he's eating a bit more today. He was given a tube of medicinal food by the vet. It's like a toothpaste tube filled with fish flavoured cat vitamins which he says can reduce his 'urge'. It's seems to have done the trick a little.

Maybe he is just a bit too randy after all
