I'm fairly new to this site and I've only posted a couple of times, but I need good vibes today.

I dropped one of my little furbabies, aka Shrimp, off with the surgeon today. She's undergoing Aryteroid lateralization today for bilateral laryngeal paralysis, which is very rare in cats. She has to spend at least one night there if all goes well.

I hate dropping my babies off. It was the hardest thing this morning. I've never had one of my babies undergo such a surgery of this expense and hopefully only one overnight stay.

I'm at work and this is going to drive me nuts all day waiting for the phone call from the surgeon.

I miss her already.....

Jo Ann...... I've never heard of this condition or the surgery before. I'm new here as well but I am sending you and Shrimp HUGE vibes.. I know what you mean about how it makes you feel when you drop them off and have to leave and then wait to hear about the outcome. My thoughts and my furkids thoughts are with you for sure. Keep us posted as to how things go. My real name is MJ.

I bawl my eyes out when I have to leave a kitty at the vet. Even if it's just for a simple dental o something.

If you feel like talking, we're here. I would like to know more about bilateral laryngeal paralysis, and Shrimp's experience specifically if you feel like putting it all down.

I am sending positive vibes and prayers for Shrimp and you. You are so right about how hard it is to leave our little friends.

Please keep us posted how Shrimp is doing. I would also be interested in knowing more about the diagnosis, when you feel up to it.

Shrimp was diagnosed with bilateral laryngeal paralysis about 3 years ago when she showed up on our doorstep. She was emaciated, flea ridden, anemic, and could barely breathe.

After many tests, including much needed dental work, she was treated for URI, which helped, but did not resolve the issue. They wanted to do an MRI next, but I decided to go for a second opinion first and the vet diagnosed her problem right away. I had to bring her to have her esphagus scoped to confirm the diagnosis.

It's a condition that dogs get, usually labs and similar. The flaps that open and close in the larynx become paralized and the animal starts to have trouble breathing, because it closes down leaving just a small area for them to breathe through. They go in and surgically tie back one of the sides of the larynx. With cats they usually treat medically with prednisone.

I've been treating with prednisone, but that has stopped working and it's time to proceed with surgery or euthansia.

We're not sure how old She is. She was a stray, but they estimated 8 - 10. She managed to wrap her little tail around my heart, so there's no question whether surgery or not.

The doc just called. Stage 1 of x-rays and bronchoscopy completed. Larynx & vocal cords extremely inflamed. He says she is doing great under anesthesia and wanted my okay to proceed because he said there is a lot of scarring which means she's had this problem for a very long time. There's a good chance it will work, but he cannot guarantee and wanted to know if I wanted to continue.

I told him to go for it and lets hope for the best. She's obviously a tough little kitty if she's made it this far.

I do trust him and the doctor that did the scoping. They both have been in on everything with her from the start. I think it's also because it's rare and they find her to be an interesting case.

Prayers for everything to be ok.
I was scared monday when Oreo had surgery.
I think we all get scared.
I am glad she found you and not someone that would let her die instead.

Shrimp Chose well when she went to your door. Cats have a way of doing that, I notice.

Her story has brought tears to my eyes, what she must have gone through before she found you.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for caring about her so much. If there's any justice in this world her surgery will be a success and she will go on to enjoy a lovely long old age with you.
