Just wondering: What was the nicest compliment you ever got? (non-physical)

Mine was "You're genuine" (The whole thing was somethingsomething "because you're genuine" . The person who said it isn't famous for giving compliments either-- so it was kind of a shock. Anyway, the moment I heard it, I was touched, but I also thought "Uhh, not all the time!"
)

Another was from my pharmacist Mimi. She said "Lucky things happen to you because you're a good person." This was after a fortunate run-in with my doctor who was in the immediate area.

My husband recently told me that, on the day we met, he realized that the whole world around him was a blur and that I was the only thing that was in focus.
(There is a such a thing as love at first sight BTW - we've been together 20 years and celebrated our 15 wedding anniversary yesterday.
)

For years, though, I've been told the same thing by different people at different times, that I'm like "a mirror" in that I treat people how they treat me. I guess that's kind of true, don't know if it's really a compliment, but it's weird that several people have said that, unprompted. Better be nice, then.

Interesting you should ask this. Yesterday at work, this one guy came back from having lunch with another guy. He asked, "Were your ears burning?" I said, "Why?" And he said they were talking about me at lunch. That I'm genuinely sweet, to everyone, and down to earth and nice, but I won't take crap from anyone....if anyone crosses me, that's it.

I never thought of myself in that way, but, if someone has noticed it, I guess I am!
I sort of like that.

I'm not sure, actually. I usually hear things like "you're too nice" and it's not necessarily meant as a compliment.

Though there's been plenty on here who have thanked me for helping, which are less likely to be thinly veiled complaints.

Some people will compliment me on stuff I've made, which is usually good, but usually the compliment there is if they ask for more.

People telling me I don't look my age or look very surprised when I tell them my age and this includes doctors. I feel very good about this as most women would.

Probably the two that meant the most to me came from on of my more troubled students when I was a long term substitute. He's really a great kid, but follows his friends too much. I got to see a side of him that none of the other teachers could believe since he was in a small class with people he didn't know.

"You make me want to do better."

"You always smile, even if we're bad. It makes me want to smile too."

I was a young adult and a male friend of the family while we were all sitting around talking about weddings and how some people handle them said "When you get married I picture you being a classy bride" Being young and not having a father in my life it took me by suprise that someone would give me a compliment like that.

My ex-partner, when we first started dating came over to my house..After looking at all the cat toys, treats, cat-condo, open windows everywhere, he said outloud but almost to himself, "...man, if I were a cat, I would SO want to live HERE..." That made me feel so good to this day, he'll never know!!

great stories...

Nuh uh...might give me away!
When I was in high school, the valedictorian (pompous jerk) once pulled me aside and said, "You know why I envy you? You have compassion."

Highest praise I had ever received in high school.

The BEST compliment of my life was the day my DH said, "I do."

The best compliments I've received have been about my work in school, when one of my professors told me "I enjoyed reading your paper, you have great potential". And when one of the supervisors at my work also complimented me on how well I'm doing the job
Also if someone compliments one of my artsy creations I do as a hobby
That stuff just makes my day because I care so much about my school and my work, pretty much anything I work hard on to achieve.

Compliments that are out of the blue make me nervous. I never believe them, I think people either try to flatter me because they want something from me or that they just don't know the real me

I sound like such a grumpy and negative person...But I really get irritated when people compliment me sometimes, because I don't care if so and so thinks I'm smart or beautiful or nice, it's only one person's opinion, one person who only knows one small part of me...it's so subjective.

I know exactly what you are saying! I am an artist, when people compliment my designs at work, it makes my day
.....But when people try to sound complimentary
when it's so obvious they are just complimenting themselves........Stop wasting our time

One of mine was just yesterday. My boss called me for our monthly meeting, (which actually covered the last 2 months, lol) He said "I never have to worry about you, you always have good stats" He told me last week I was one of his top performers. Some of the people on my team are slackers.. lol

After we had been dating a bit, my boyfriend said to me, "Finally, a woman with some BRAINS!!" We are still together.

I'm revising mine, because I've actually been thinking about this question alot today. I think I brought up the "were your ears ringing" thing because it happened so recently (yesterday).

Actually, I get complimented on my acting and my singing, but the one that meant the most was from my dad. He had just started showing the early stages of dementia. I was home for a visit, and he walked into the kitchen with the radio. He said, "Listen to this. This is Ella Fitzgerald. Nancy, when you sing, you sound just like Ella."

My heart was filled. It made me so happy.

The nicest compliment I've ever gotten was from my mentor/advisor a few months ago when I was finishing up my degree. He said, "You're one of the best students we've ever had, and we really want to try to keep you around." That was one of the reasons I decided to take a job with his group after I graduated.

Me too, but only when I've actually lost weight. I've had a couple of relatives who told me I looked like I had lost some weight when I had actually gained weight since the last time I saw them. If it's not sincere, I'd rather they were just brutally honest like my one aunt. I walked in the room and the first thing she said was, "Wow, you've really put on some weight!"

Grogs -Your post reminds me of an ex co worker who trained me. He was demanding/real tough/all business. He said I was a fast learner and I shot back and told him he was a superb teacher - because he was! He got out of me what he put into me. funny because the first 2 days I thought Oh boy, this guy and I are gonna butt heads but it never happened. We worked side-by-side 5 days a week for over a year. The synergy was almost pure perfection.

Anyway - Just thinking back on Mimi- What she said was "Good things happen to you because you're a nice person" - Thats more accurate compared to my opening post.

when i worked at the bookstore a lady came in to tell me 'thank you', that it was because of me that her son, who's dyslexic, started to read and hadn't stopped. she'd been in over a year ago and i recommended some books and he started to read.

the other one i got was when i was feeding my strays in the business offices parking lot one night and one of the lawyers who had been working late pulled up and said to me 'my mom always told me you can tell a lot about a person and their character by how they treat animals'. please keep doing what you doing.

and i've been feeding the strays there for 6 years now.
