OK - this really bothers me... whether it's pets or kids. In the parking lot of the local hypermart (Meijer), car next to me has a big dog in it. Looks like a pit or pit mix. Brindle and white. Now, it is 90 degrees outside here in SE Michigan. So the car - sitting on the hot asphalt even with the windows partially down and the moon roof popped up is what... maybe 100 degrees? More??

Hmmm. Do I approach the dog? I take a chance. Man, a big luv-bug!!! Tail wagging, butt wiggling and kissing the air trying to get to me! NO water in the car. Sheesh. And he was panting quite heavily.

So I run inside and get a bottle of water, tear down a paper soft drink-cup so it's small enough for him to get at and give the big lug a cold drink. He laps up about 8 oz, gives me more doggie smooches and then lays down on the back seat.

I left that torn down cup with water in it on the back seat.

I don't know how long the car was there before I arrived but thank goodness it was gone when I went back out 45 min later. I would have called the cops. But then since it was a pit bull, I was concerned something bad might happen to him.

I feel the same way. I was about to call the cops on someone who had his dog in a hot car but he came out before I could. If people have to run errands why the heck don't they keep their pets at home. There is no reason for the animal to sit in a hot car. I just don't understand some people and I don't think I ever will.

I use to leave Snowbie in the car (only while I ran in somewhere) with the car locked and running with the A/C but when I thought about if someone stole my car, would they really care about him? I stopped doing it.

I cannot stand it when someone leaves their dog in a hot car, with NO A/C.

Here's a list of the few states that have laws against it ....

http://www.animallaw.info/articles/qvuspetsincars.htm

The article said that there are numerous local ordinances that address this. I would look up what your local ordinances are. Hopefully, there is something in place to allow you to take action, such as call the police, the next time you see this. (or look under animal cruelty laws)

Animals die every year from being left in a hot car : (

Unfortunately, Michigan is not on that list. Like I said, the windows were about 1/3 of the way down and the moon roof popped up, but still... not smart.

I hate seeing that in summer (here where it easily gets 110F outside) and on the coldest days of winter.
But I agree with your concern over what the police would do to a pit or bully breed.
I don't know if your area has BSLs like other parts of Michigan does.
Maybe the people really didn't intend to be in there that long but the pharmacy (if there is one) messed something up or there was a problem?

Check with your local ordinances and see if there is anything there. Even with the window cracked, it can still heat up. There are also cruel people out there that could throw anything into the car for the dog to eat : (
