Spooky, wigged out cat?

We have had Sawyer now for a year. We adopted him at almost 1 years old and when we first seen him he had not been neutered yet. He was neutered the day before we took him in.

He is very close to my daughter. He follows her everywhere. Feels the safest with her. Sits on her lap. Meows at her door if she shuts it. Waits outside the bathroom for her etc. She can carry him in almost any position and he is fine.

One thing we have noticed as he gets older is is turning into a spastic, spooky and jumpy cat. He spooks at the drop of a hat. Worse than a horse. I don't trust him anymore. If we come home and open the door, he flys by at 1000 mph and bounces off the doors. I have two cats and the other one is a calm, sweet, non-spooky 4 year old we got at the animal shelter around the same time we got Sawyer. We were talking about her last night. She will sit next to any of us and clean herself. Not him. Both are strictly indoor.

His spookiness is starting to injure us. A month ago I was sitting on the couch and wanted to get up and go into the kitchen. I know how jumpy he is so I gently went to lift him and he jumped about 2' into the air and took flesh with him. Now I have two 5" scars running down my arm. The other day my daughter had him on her lap and he spooked at something else and now she has horrible scratches on her arms. Night before last he took about 3" of flesh from her finger. Nobody wants him in their laps anymore.

He will be walking across the living room floor and all it takes is a noise to send him 3 feet straight up into the air. He's always on high alert and when anyone walks into the room, he tears across the floor like a bat outta hell. I am afraid in one of his episodes he is going to take my daughters eye out.

I have had many cats through out my life but never a schizoid like this.

What can be causing this behavior? Is it just his personality? The bleeding he causes is getting old.

Has he been vet checked recently? I'd wonder if he perhaps has some hearing/vision loss??

Do you have any history on him prior to when you adopted him?

There are things you can try to help calm him - like Rescue Remedy & Feliway.

My Casey was a "scaredy cat" too, but not at that level. He did not trust strangers at all and just ran and hid. Loud noises like fireworks, however, did not bother him at all.

Some cats are just naturally more calm, like my Buddy is now. In other ways, he can be really crazy and wild while playing, but he is pretty calm in most situations (he does not like the vacuum, although I would guess many cats feel that way about vacuums! ).

Ruling out a health issue is always a good idea when a cat's personality changes drastically. It sounds like perhaps when nobody was around, something must have really scared him and is on high-stress alert. Perhaps you could discuss w/your vet something that may calm him down until he is back to his old self? Nothing long-term, but it would seem he is stressed right now and could use something calming. Or maybe try some Rescue Remedy; that may be enough to make him feel better. Good luck and I hope he is feeling better soon!

Sounds like something is going on that has nothing to do with the actual environment, because he seems comfortable with you guys when he's NOT spooked. To me this sounds like some kind of sensory issue--hearing loss, vision loss, or even nerve damage to the inner ear--this can cause hypersensitivity to even normal volume sounds--sounds being painful to the ears and this causes an exaggerated startle response. All of these things can happen to a cat with time, though usually to older cats, not ones only 2 years old. I'd definitely have a vet look at this, and tell them the same things you told us.

Best of luck!

I, too recommend a vet visit. And video tape some of his spooky episodes. He could be developing FHS.(feline hyperesthesia) or he may have some other health problem going on.

Keep us posted!
