Well its just shortly after midnight so I figured I'd throw the QOTD out here so I don't forget.

My question today is an easy one:

How is your memory? Do you remember better by seeing, hearing or writing? Is short term or longterm memory better?

hmmm, I can't remember what else I was going to ask.

Kinesthetic learner
Visual learner
Auditory learner

Of course that's very basic and there's things that can greatly affect each person. Many are a mix of all three or at least two styles. Being almost strictly of one type can be more common in some developmental disorders - it's just how the brain wires itself.

I answered most of it already here.

It depends on the information, how much "recorded", as to whether it will be firmly in my long term memory. Once there recall is very good - it's as if I'm watching short films.
Short term memory is ok, but working memory is not. I cannot do too many things at once or else everything sort of shorts out and very little is remembered - especially not what I was doing or what I heard.

Since I have very good recall, I really can't reread or watch anything like most people can.

My memory's a tricky thing, I can remember what happened ten years ago and on the other hand, I ate breakfast about fifteen minutes ago and I've already forgotten what I had!

If I write it, I remember it. My auditory memory is less than my reading memory. I'm in my early forties and I definitely notice an overall decline over the last couple of years. I don't like this getting older stuff!

My memory is getting worse. My mom and her 3 sibs developed Alzheimers. So heredity is not on my side.

Although, I think what I am experiencing is normal forgetfulness. I saw what my mom went through and it is a different kind of memory loss.

I think I just get too busy sometimes. Like yesterday, I couldn't remember if I gave Goofy his insulin in the am. I called the vet and they said it's better to miss a dose than give another if already given.

My memory has stutters so to speak. I remember a lot of stuff and the stuff will come out when needed but i find that I put stuff somewhere safe and then I can't remember the place I put it. I know I should write myself notes.

I write alot of stuff down, but I've always been like that. Basically, my memory's pretty good, but if I start to get busy, then I write things down to remember to do them. I have 4 calendars going!!

But I'm always working at it. I have to memorize scripts from time to time, and that keeps my mind in pretty good shape. I memorize monologues for auditions. I memorize music and lyrics, so I'm constantly exercising that muscle.

My hubby says my memory is too good
. If I write down a grocery list I never need to bring the list with me, it is stuck in my brain. I also remember by smell and very oddly colours.

I remember by seeing. When I was in school, if I didn't know a test answer, I could usually remember it by what page I saw it on in the textbook. My short term memory is better.

Certainly my memory isn't as good as it once was. I remember important dates but they are of course listed on my wall calendar and in the computer calendar. Since my schedule was way off this past Tuesday I forgot to tape a show I wanted to see. Luckily my sister had taped it and I can see hers. Sometimes I forget what people tell me, I guess it wasn't all that important
For the most part tho, I have a pretty good memory.

My memory is not good. I have (had LOL) a good short term memory, so cramming for tests worked for me. But my long term memory has always been terrible.

I am REALLY surprised I don't learn well by hearing things, because I identify sounds amazingly well. I can tell who it is on the phone if I've only talked to them once. I can identify types of guitars being played in music - that kind of thing. So it surprises me that I don't remember just from hearing a lecture or something. I HAVE to write it to remember it, so I think it's an issue of attention. If I take notes during a lecture, I remember the stuff I wrote. To "study," I have to write notes of what I'm reading in order to remember it, I cannot just read it.

....I'm the same way with the grocery list. I write down everything I need - then don't need the list and don't forget anything (unless I forgot to put it on the list.
).

Gary, on the other hand, despite his current med regime, has an AMAZING memory for certain things. It's not photographic - though close - he can remember conversations, dates, faces, clothes, jewelry, hair color, hair styles - he notices the slightest changes in hair styles of people we see once a month, or he'll notice a slight change in hair color (of course it's not always a good thing - the "OMG what did you do to your hair?" isn't always endearing
). His long term memory is amazing, and constantly impresses people.

On the other hand, I follow him around the house the minute we walk in the door picking up stuff he sets down and put it away - or we'll never find his phones or his keys. And there is definitely some "switch" missing in his brain, because he'll look at a pot of boiling water and say - hey, that looks like it's boiling - and stick his finger in it to make sure it's boiling (example). He is CONSTANTLY doing stuff like that (and does, in fact, burn himself a LOT). I, on the other hand, need to make that mistake just once.

My memory has always been pretty good. I remember pretty much everything I read (if I need to...such as things for work, or when I was in school.) I was always able to remember where the information was on the page when I was studying, although I wouldn't go as far as saying it was photographic. When reading for pleasure, I'm able to turn off that hyper-acute memory. I seem to be able to remember trivial anecdotes, and useless tidbits, which can be rather entertaining.

So far, my memory is great, but I'm not that old yet either (only in my mid 20's). I'm mostly an auditory/visual learner. When I hear something I remember it almost instantly. It's both short term and long term memory. To this day I can still recite thousands of quotes from movies I've seen, regardless of when I saw it.
