Kitten Stool Issues

I took in an orphan kitten who was approximately 2 wks old when we got her. Immediately began bottle feeding with KMR, and she's always had a healthy appetite and has been behaving, acting, and growing normally. She has been to the vet 3 times [once for an initial checkup in which she was given dewormer].

Sugar is now a little over 4 weeks old and she's had a slew of issue so far.

Originally she was pooping normally, and then all of a sudden she started having a bloody butt and seemed constipated. I took her to the vet and she did a stool sample which came back clear and then gave me some ointment for her butt. Sugar continued playing and eating normally.

The issue was not getting any better and her stools were harder and not coming very often and there was still blood around her butt a lot of the time so I took her to a different vet [since we have a small town our vet is only part time and I took her to the neighboring town's vet]. This was last Monday. The vet said it was most likely irritation from being constipated and gave her lactulose, did another stool test and said that it was negative for coccidia and giardia but still but her on a treatment of Albon just in case. I gave her the lactulose as directed and then Friday she had a really big mushy yellow poop. She ended up having loose poops two more times that night, began being a lot more playful and I stopped the lactulose.

She finished up her Albon today and her poop is super runny. It has been for the past 2-3 days. I've had to change her bedding at least 2 times a day and she still hasn't figured ou the litterbox. She poops in the box on her own and when I have her out for feeding and plays, she poops on the towel I put down. It's as if she can't control it cause she poops and walks and poops some more. It's liquidy and yellow and for the first time tonight there was one drop of it that had what appeared to be some clearish mucus with a drop of blood. She is still eating normally and acting completely fine but her stool has not yet become regular.

I read that mucus in stool could be giardia or coccidia but the vet tested her for it and it was negative + gave her the Albon treatment as precaution.

Does anyone know why this could be this way and what I can do to help remedy it? When I called the vet the techs did nothing to answer my questions and the vet was not in as usual.

KMR can sometimes not agree with kittens. If you can try another formula or slowly wean her off of it and onto a good wet kitten food it might help - unless the vet suggests a specific food.

One of the problems you're having is that she didn't have a mother to nurse on long enough to help pick up what she needed from her mother's milk. It can be a problem with really young ones and will lead to diarrhea or constipation issues.

Along with getting her back in to see the vet, go pick up a tube of the bene-bac for small animals. Give her around a pea size dab of it in her food a couple times a day for a few days.

Her mother nursed her for 2 weeks. We know for sure because we have seen the kittens since birth [the other didn't make it]. She was a stray and she had them in our shed and then moved them and we found them the day the mother was hit by a car and killed. But I don't know anything about kittens so that still may not have been long enough but I do know she nursed them for 2 weeks.

I have to call the vet today because they were supposed to get more KMR in and I need to pick up some, and I will ask about the bene-bac. What is that exactly?

Benebac is a probiotic. Great product.

However I'm questioning the Albon: Albon is indicated for the treatment of respiratory, genitourinary tract, enteric, and soft tissue infections in dogs and cats (taken from the website)

flagyl (metronidazole) is more commonly prescribed for this problem in kittens.

I recommend you ask about it.

I will ask about it when I call. How do you pronounce flagyl? I don't want to be asking the vet's office, these questions and not even know what I'm saying haha.

I really wanna do whatever I can for this little gal. She's special.

Sugar pooped and peed in the litterbox for the first time this morning. The poop was still runny but at least it was in the pan. Also she ate her first bit of mushy food with formula today. I couldn't get in touch with the vet as she was not in today and both vet offices near me are out of kmr. I should have enoughto last til tomorrow when my mom can go out of town to get some. I hope.

Walmart (and kmart) usually has KMR and livestock/farm supply will either have it or a similar milk replacement formula... ironically it goes by a different name, works for several animals, and is still made by PetAg.
There could be different brand formulas in your region. Farm supply stores usually carry the small animal bene-bac, too.

I live in a very small town. Our grocery store doesn't have any and the nearest Wal-Mart is an hour away. My mom is going that way tomorrow so she is going to stop and get some. I should have enough to last til then.
