So we may be adding another to our household soon they are 2 weeks old right now so I'm trying to figure out our budget before I say yes for sure that I want one! I'm super excited, however, I raw fed Storm as a kitten and I don't have the room or DH to cooperate with this type of feeding and I need to adjust our regimen a bit.

Currently Storm is getting TOTW in the AM and wet in the PM, sometimes some more TOTW before bed. I know that TOTW is an ALS food so I'm good there but what about wet foods? Currently we feed Wellness, Eagle Pack, NB LID, and Innova. Do I need to be concerned with feeding 'kitten' wet food or are the foods I'm feeding ok?

kitten wet general is higher in calories/..

example from recent experience ...

Fancy feast kitten is 1 can per 3- 3.5 lbs

the adult has kitten instructions ... feed kittens up to double the amount of an adult ... and the instructions are 1 can for 3lb of adult wt ... so you would have to feed a 3 lb kitten 2 cans of adult vs one of kitten...

So is a 'lesser' brand of kitten food ok then? There is no way our budget is going to be able to handle 2-3 cans of what we currently feed. I know you are the 'queen' off food.
What are the best 'grocery brands' or what do I look for by-products vs soy vs wheat gluten??

In a grocery wet ( which yes I feed as it cut my wet bill in half).... I have access to a by product heavy( which in a wet food is mainly organs due to processing and unlike dry which is likely high levels of bone ... organs are good) low to no grain food without colors or artificail flavors called western family... pet pride has grain it is fifth or sixth ingrediant and by product heavy but also no colors or flavors...

I avoid soy as I have a HIGHLY allergic one ... In my house wheat gluten is out due to allergies but for most a small amount in a gravy formula would not bother me

in lower end wets I avoid colors especially red , and artificial colors and grain higher than the 5th or 6th ingrediant

Read labels the one that is half flavors grain free is 1.33-1.59 for a 22 oz YES I said 22oz

Premium kitten formulas are similar you will feed less in a "kitten" formula

Thanks Sharky! I'll do some research today and try and find some 'better' lesser brands. If I have any more questions I'll post them here.

Wow, where do you find such a large can? The largest I can find is 13.2 oz. I'm jealous
.

Surprisingly, the grocery-store brand (Hy-Vee) canned food I found seems to be pretty good. By-products, of course, but no grain or artificial colors. I'm going to post the ingredients on this forum some time and see what everyone thinks of it. It looks better than Friskies to me, but I'm no cat nutrition expert.
