Luci And Sully got into a fight and now Luci's missing his toenail on his hind leg.

How do I clean it to prevent it from getting infected?

Last time he had a torn toenail I didn't clean it (I wonder why I never though about cleaning it) and it got infected.

I used Bactine to clean and kept it from getting infected with Colloidal Silver. You can also use a bit of Neosporin twice a day on it.

Flush with saline solution (1 tsp salt to one pint distilled water) and coat with antibacterial salve. I use mastitis infusion for cows but that isn't really an option for most people.

I would recommend trying to keep it clean and dry. Triple Antibiotic ointment applied would be helpful as well. Depending on what litter you are using watch for it to get stuck to the sore toe. Maybe use shredded paper until it heals better. Definitely check with your vet if you see infection setting in.

Good Luck!

Luci's toe is doing well, no infection smell. He let's me check it and clean it everyday with out a struggle.

I didn't mention that Sully lost a nail too. After posting the question, I found a nail on the floor while cleaning my room. Sully screams when I retract his nail to clean it and apply ointment. Now it smells and I'm bringing him to the vet today.

I hope he's going a good boy and that it won't hurt much.

The last time he want to the vet when he hurt his tail, someone bit it. He screamed and peed on the table when the vet was touching his tail. It was pretty scary and I was worried he was going to bite someone.

I'm using pine pellets in a sifting litter boxes. All the sawdust goes down into the bottom pan.
