Ok So my cat Skunk came home a few days ago and we discovered he was limping, a closer look showed us that there was something wrong with his foot ...he's become very agitated, depressed, and obviously upset.

The skin around one of his claws is all red and sore looking, there's also some tuffs of hair missing from around the claw. It looks as if it hurts and he tries to pull away alot when we attempt to get closer looks.

Does anyone know what to do? ..he's been so sad these past few days and I just wish I knew how I could help ease his pain

Maybe he's been digging outside and got some dirt stuck up under the nail? I used to have a dog that happened a lot to.

If he'll let you, bath it in some warm salty water to get the gunk out. Salt water helps to aid healing. But the best thing would be to take him to the vet because if it's really infected it might need some kind of prescribed ointment.

Hope he feels better soon!!

I would talk to your vet. Could it be possible he got stung/bit by an insect? If it is red & swollen I would have it looked at. If it is infected he may need some antibiotics as well. Trying to soak it in a warm bath to get a better look at might be good as well if he will let you. It might make it feel better as well.

Good luck to you!

Ok! Thankyou everybody for your suggestions..earlier while he slept on the couch I got a good look at his toes, it appears he has a tiny red looking scratch on the skin next to his claw,it's in between the claws/skin stuff ..he wasn't losing hair to ..just licking it off alot...

Poor thing has a nervous condition and all this having to limp without easy relaxation or being able to run has made him lick himself alloottt ..his poor tail is practically bare of hair he licked it so darn much in the stress of his limping

He needs to go see a vet ....... an infection can into the bloodstream and very serious consequences for your kitty.
If he is pulling his fur out, he his in distress.
Cats are notorious for hiding pain, but him pulling/licking his tail bald is a serious sign something is wrong and needs vet attention ASAP.

Definitely a visit to the vet is in order - Pami is right, it could end up being very serious and it is most likely something very simple to treat unless the infection goes too far.
