My little girl is recovering from her pneumonia but I think the antibiotic is making her nauseous.

I am afraid to stop the course of antibiotic in case the pneumonia comes back, but then it is making her "sick" and does not want to eat. There is still about a week more to go for the med.

She licks her lips often, a sign of nauseous, and she makes this vomiting action when I place food in front of her.

I am still syringe feeding her, but she vomits sometimes after feeding. I hate seeing her so skinny and yet unable to eat. Is there something I can do to help her feel better?

You can mash up about a third of a tablet of pepcid, add it to a meat flavored baby food and give it to her. If you could just give her just the third of a tablet without food a half an hour before she eats- that would be best.

What antibiotic do they have her on? I have better luck with Clavamox or Baytril because Amoxy seems to make cats vomit more. You can also ask your vet to have a pharmacy compound the drug if it is long term then you rub the paste on her ear.

Call and tell your vet that she is getting sick on the medication, there are other antibiotics available, Baytril, as mentioned is an excellent drug, and does not usually cause illness like the penicillin drugs do.

It is however very bitter, so expect some foaming, unless you get it in pill form and use plain gel caps for dosing.

I wouldn't recommend using famotidine (pepcid) without checking with your vet. Pepcid is used safely in cats, but we don't know your cat's health history, never give your cat any kind of medicine without asking the attending vet first.

I agree - call the vet and see if there's another med you can try, or what other suggestions they may have. My girl didn't do well on Clavomox (vomited, wouldn't eat) - my vet switched me and it helped.

My boy was on Baytril at one point - pill pockets worked great with him!

Good luck - I know it hurts to watch them feeling so poorly even if you know the meds are designed to help.

Yep, call the vet and see if there's something else you can give her. Also, if she's having any drainage or a runny nose, anytime she bends her head down to eat, the snot starts running, so that's an issue, too. Try elevating her food dish on a stack of books or a wooden block or something so that she doesn't have to bend her head down as far to eat.

Actually she's on Baytril right now. She was previously on Clavomox and it did not work for her pneumonia. It's clearing up with Baytril, so I'm not sure if we should switch to yet another type. Especially when we are not exactly sure what is the bacteria causing the pneumonia as there was no discharge from her that can be cultured on.

She is on the flavoured type, which I suppose should taste better. Sometimes she does foam a little when I did not push it deep enough into her throat. But even when she did not foam, she sometimes gag a little. Even when I only give her water (place the dish before her) she sometimes gag or keep licking her lips.

stephanietx: No she does not have any discharge at all. Nose is dry and not blocked.

No use raising the food dish, she will not eat on her own. She sniffs and gags at the food. I have been syringe feeding her 4x a day for the past few weeks.

Is pepcid some kind of gastric pills? She does not throw up gastric juice. These few days she just have that gagging action, without throwing up anything. Previously she will throw up her food, or some clear liquid/saliva.

Pepcid is to help with upset tummies and nausea. In humans, it's for indigestion.

Talk to your vet about Cerenia. It's an anti-nausea medication and is approved for use in cats.

Baytril comes in a flavor tab form. However, there is a risk of blindness with excessive use.
