Do senior females eventually no longer go into heat?

Out of curiosity do female feline seniors like human females go through the change and no longer have heat cycles to deal with?

As far as I know - no. The problem is the longer you let them cycle, the higher the risk for pyrometra (infection of the uterus). Most all breeders spay their queens after a few litters, so they are spayed by about 5 yrs old.

I would never risk letting a female not be spayed or allow her to have many litters. My queen was about 6 when she was spayed. I let her have 3 litters and then another breeder wanted a litter from her - then she was spayed after that. She was a very healthy girl with no problems breeding or nursing.

I do have a female that could not be altered because it would have killed her.
She has many problems.
I was taught to watch for pyro.
My Meeko had that and I knew what it was before we even went to the vet.
She has not gone in heat since she was 15.
Coco is 18 now.

I don't know all my girls are spayed and they were done from when I could to prevent any health issues. I would presume so though. x
