Well this all started a couple days ago, and its just gotten progressively worse. I can't even sleep out of worry and guilt.

I'm taking him to the vet today... but i'm REALLY worried...

Buddha has been trying to pass a bowel movement unsuccessfully for the past three days. Now at first he was just a little slow and lethargic, and he puked a couple times. Now... after 2 1/2 days of this, he can barely move. He climed in to the litter box ... but once he got there he couldn't even stand long enough to try anything. So i picked him up and put him outside of the litter box. He moved all of about 2 inches before just flopping down on the floor.

He hasn't eaten forsure in atleast 2 days. As far as water, i keep trying to give him some... and he drinks a little... but he puked it back up yesterday , and puked again later a whole bunch of stomach acid.

I have been watching him get steadily weaker over the past two days.. and I feel like i'm on the edge of panic.

I remember when my baby cousin was constipated, my mom lubed up her finger and just popped it right in his little bum. I wanted to know if there is anything like this that i can do for my cat, but all i have here that might work as a lubricant is butter.

I am literally beside myself with worry right now, and i would have taken him to the vet yesterday if we had the money. I'm just crossing my fingers that when i call to make an appointment today that they aren't booked solid, and i'm tearing myself a new one for not thinking ahead and booking the appointment ahead of time.

He has a hard mass in the far end of his abdomen, could this be the constipation or am i looking at something far far more serious.

This is an emergency situation, please get him to the vet today. Now. It sounds like he is in terrible pain.

Is he peeing? If you have not seem him pee take him to the vet immediately, right now, as males will die with a blockage, and usually within 24 hours.

So...off to the vet...right now! Don't call....just GO!

have you left yet?

I am sorry to nag, but Bubbha needs immediate attention, I am sure he is suffering terribly.

Don't call, just put him in the carrier and go, walk in to the vet with him.

The hard mass is most likely his bladder. Full to bursting, and it will, causing him terrible agony and death.

Hurry! (but don't speed, drive safe))

Your kitty needs to see a vet right away.

The exact situation you described happened to my kitty last July. My kitty stopped eating and was unable to defecate when he tried. We took him to the vet immediately and it ended up that he had a tumor blocking his colon and was unable to pass anything due to the tumor getting too large. He drank water and could urinate ok, but he stopped eating completely since he was unable to pass anything through his colon. He was very weak and seemed to be in pain.

We had to make the awful decision to put him to sleep to end his suffering (due to his condition and age there was little chance that surgery could have helped him). Poor baby. I hope this does not happen to your kitty. He needs to see a vet.

well I got him there at 9:30... the vet examined him.. and of course its his bladder that was the hard mass. I knew just by looking at him that he couldn't wait. I have been paceing all morning worried sick about him.

They gave me an estimate of what his care would cost... and right now .. i must have more horseshoes up my butt than humanly possible. My foster family has pitched in 200$, and the Vancouver Humaine Society has pitched in another 100... leave it with 100 for the estimate. This does not include blood-work that he might need or X-rays.

I feel SO guilty right now.. cuz i know the food i'm feeding them in garbage.. but sometimes when we're broke.. i feed them the cheap food. Now i'm going to have to feed everyone this 45$ bad of urinary crystal dissolving food. I am immediately closing up their old bag of food, and splitting the one cat of cat food i have between the three cats that are home.

I have been crying so badly .. uncontrollably at times.. hyperventilating... no exaggeration. I'm so broke.. and I was so worried ... man.. family really comes through when they need to.. and that god for places like the humane society.

My bf and I are barely making ends meat... i work .. but my work goes on vacation.. so we're left high and dry for a while.... This is it though.. i will get a real job if it f'ing kills me! My Buddha is my world. .... if i lost him... i don't know how i would get on with my life.

What are you guy's experiences going through this? How long was the cat blocked up and... when you got blood work done (if you did) how bad did the kidney's look. I know there is potential for a problem with them... and what if in the worst case sinareo there is? Where do i go from there.. i'm barely able to pay these bills... my little boy ... i'm so worried...

Oh I'm so glad you got Buddha to the vet in time.

Now some questions for you: I am assuming he had to be catheterized. Did you leave him at the hospital? That is standard procedure for a cat so seriously affected. He is usually kept catheterized until they are sure he is opened, then kept in the hospital until he has peed on his own.

Pain medication should have been given.

He should have have a urinalysis done right away with another sample sent out for a culture to be done. The Culture takes a little longer for results. If bacteria was found in the initial urinalysis he should have been put on antibiotics, right away.

Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease is a very serious condition in a male cat because the male cat has a very narrow urethra and can block very easily. Blockage can be from crystals, struvite or oxalate, or stones or even just inflammation.

It is crucial that he eat the prescription food, and absolutely nothing else. No other treats or snacks, no human food, prescription food only. Canned food is better than dry food, if he'll eat it. I know it's expensive, maybe you could give just a half a can a day in addition to the dry food.

I recommend he also take cosequin for cats, ask you vet about it. Cosequin is an arthritis supplement but it also helps keep the bladder walls smooth, so things don't stick. Got to keep the urine flowing through, and any debris in the urine.

Since you have other cats, you should probably stop free feeding. The other cats can eat a non prescription food, but Buddha should only ever eat the RX food.

How old is Bubbha? Make sure you have plenty of litter boxes and make sure they are kept spotlessly clean. Be sure to play with him every day so he gets plenty of exercise. Put water bowls in every room near where he might sleep or hang out to encourage frequent drinking.

Please don't hesitate to ask any other questions you may have, there are quite a few of us here who deal with FLUTD on a daily basis.

PS I'm very happy to hear people pitched in to help you with Buddha's bills.

Suggestions on raising money for him: Sell anything you have that you don't need. Have a yard sale, to "Benefit Buddha". Or a car wash or a bake sale, or all three (not all at once!).

See if your neighbors or friends would like to be involved. If you belong to a church, see if your church members would like to get involved. Many people in the world would like to "help a little" if only given the chance. Put all funds away to be used for Buddha's vet bills, because there will most likely be more than just today's, if your vet feels there may be kidney damage.

Please keep us posted.

Oh poor Buddha! I'm glad you got him to the vet in time. I haven't had a cat block on me, but I work at a vet, and have seen quite a few scenarios. Most kitties come out of it just fine if it is caught in time. They usually are catheterized and stay with us for a few days, sometimes as long as a week. We keep the catheter in for a few days, but we keep them after we pull it to make sure they don't reblock. The things we worry about with the bloodwork are of course the kidney values as not being able to pee builds toxins in the body, but also the potassium level is important as it can rise and if it gets too high, the heart can stop. We usually put them on fluids as these cats can be dehydrated and we want to flush the kidneys. we then put them on the appropriate diet (unfortuanately Hills C/D, I'm not a fan of Hills but sometimes this diet is the only one that works for cats) We also sometimes give them a urinary acidifier and antibiotics. They do fine after this, but unfortunately kitties that block once have a high chance of blocking again so diet is really important to manage these kitties

Also, check to see if there's something like Care Credit that you can use. http://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/ Not sure if this available in Canada. Also, talk with your vet and explain your situation. See if they'll work out a payment plan or something like that with you. Maybe you can clean or something for them to work off your payment.

well everyone... ty so much for your well wishes.. i haven't had time to read all what you have written.. but currently the vet phoned us back and we hummed and hawed with the humane society and the vet and they said it was 1500 for a surgury to remove the blockage which couldn't be disolved.. and more like posibly 2500 altogether because they would have to keep him for two weeks

i edited this to put in.. that noone was willing to put in the money because the vet was unsure of how badly his kidneys were damaged, and the blood test would have taken longer than he had.. and we didn't want him to die in pain

buddha is in the process of becoming and angel ... my bf left to sign for him in a hurry so he wouldn't feel pain. i don't belive in heaven or anything... but i just pray that i can get him creamated....i'm beond beside myself with grief and guilt.. and its just another sign we need money.. the surgury was one thing... and... if i had a credit card i wouldn't care about hte debt.. but i .. it was out of my hands..... i feel so broken... like i just lost a piece of my soul

Oh I'm so terribly sorry. It's really really horrible when it comes down to money, but you did the best you could by him. I believe we are reunited with our cats on the other side so I know you and Buddha will be too, though I know that's no comfort.

The most important thing was to end his suffering, and you did that. Which kitty was he, in your picture video? If he is the one always piled with the other, the other kitty will need a lot of extra loving now as s/he will be missing and looking for Buddha.

I'm so sorry.

(edit: By the way, if you have other male cats, get them on an all canned, non fish, diet for life, this will help cut down the chances of this ever happening again.)

Oh, I'm so sorry....you loved Buddha and released him from his pain. I know you're devastated now. My prayers are with you and your family, and with Buddha.
