Simulated bugs to stimulate movement in lazy kitty?

Anyone have any thoughts on how to help here?

Billy is overweight, and according to the vet, he's young enough we don't have to go insane about getting him to lose weight fast - but he needs to lose 3-4 pounds and if we haven't done it by his annual next year, we're gonna be in trouble.

...we've always let the kitties free feed on dry food, and we feed them one wet meal a day. We have sometimes a very wacky schedule, and I have dreaded taking them off the free feeding.

When we needed Lazlo and Ming Loy to lose weight, we figured out the amount of dry food so it was gone by morning and was only out at night, and we put it up, so they had to climb to get it. We also focused on interactive play with them and getting them exercising more - and it worked.

But these tricks are NOT working with Bill. He likes to play with wand toys - but even with various da Bird attachments, he will NOT run after them. He loves to swing around from the cat tree to grab at them - but that's it. He will not chase, run or jump.

He'll run around and chase Flowerbelle when she wants to play - but we can't control that, and it's obviously not frequent enough.

Tonight we found the key to get him moving - a bug. A moth got into the RV, and he nearly wrecked the place trying to get at it.

Anyone have any ideas on this - is there any kind of toy that will simulate a bug? (And he doesn't react to the red dot or catnip).

Or because he's a feral rescue that was 2 years old when we brought him inside.... he'll only go for the real thing? Do I go out and buy (or try to find) a cricket every day? Do I look for spiders and stick 'em on the wall and hope he notices them? Do I make a point of letting in a moth or two every evening?

I have a feeling he's only going to go for the real thing.... but if anyone has any ideas, I'm up for trying. Anything to get him moving more!

(And no, Gary does not want to leash train him - he's worried it'll make him want to get outside, and he's happy not going near the front door right now. This is an argument I will not (have not) win (won). I think he'd love it and tolerate it. Bummer, really, but that's the situation).

This is our problem with Leo. He has a very low metabolism and is not big on playing. The play sessions did help a little bit since we began the intros with Sweet Pea.

A couple of weeks ago I bought Neko Flies, there are four attachments available, three bugs and a furry critter. We rotate them and it helps, he loves them especially the spider which crawls like a real one. The kragonfly is a winner too. Leo is not a runner in general but he does pounce and hunt these toys. ANY exercise is good when they are not active. We also increased the wet food and decreased the dry based on our holistic vet's advice; he gets 1/4 cup Evo and 1.5 oz Wellness/ NB wet split in 5 meals during the day. He lost 8 oz in 6 weeks.

Our holistic vet told us that although he is overweight the probability of him developing diabetes is low if he is fed a very low carb diet.

Hope this helps. Kissies to adorable Billy!

Thank you! I got to searching online for "bug" toys and found the Neko toys! I was worried because the spider looked so big, so that is great news.

I also found several da Bird toys for ferrets - a bee and a butterfly. The dragonfly I can't find anywhere but Drs. Foster & Smith, and they're out of stock. But hopefully between all of these things, we'll get him moving.

And yeah - I have not been looking forward to taking them off free feeding, but we're going to have to do just that - and we've been planning on upping the wet intake. The low carb thing makes sense There aren't any vets around here that really know much about diet - and that our vet would say just to get him to lose weight rather than additionally mentioning the low carb diet just goes to show ya...

That is GREAT news about Leo!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats!

Laurie, you are very welcome!

I saw the bee and the butterfly but did not get them because Leo likes to sink its teeth and pull at the toys, so they would not last 15 min in our house. Maybe Billy will play differently with them, it's worth trying.

The Neko spider is not big and is hilarious, even my husband has a blast with it...

Our regular vet who is wonderful is just not a nutritionist either. So when we took Sammy in to the holistic vet we asked about Leo. She did say that we may just have a "fat" kitty and then gave us the advice about more wet food and low carbs (they have been on low carbs for a while so I think it's the increase in wet plus the exercise that is helping). We feed them the low carb EVO dry food.

Is not easy to give up to the free feeding but if we did free fed, Leo would be in big trouble because he does the mindless eating thing. Tubi would overeat too. In our household we also have the complication of Sammy's hyperthyroidism and sarcoma (he has to eat a lot more than the others).

I am sure you will find something that will work for your little boy!!!
