My coworker Kim left work early to pick up her daughter and take Happy Boy to the vet for the final time.

Happy Boy is a gorgeous long haired orange boy, who unfortunately has kidney failure, like his "sister" Whiskers who passed a little over a year ago. It sure appears to be genetic, and unfortunately came on too soon for both of them. Whiskers was only ~8 years old; Happy Boy is only ~13 years old. His health took a horrible downturn over the weekend - Kim couldn't believe how quickly it's happened. She wasn't ready for the end to come so soon.

They were from the same colony of barn cats, so there is no doubt they were related somehow even if they weren't from the same parents. Before Kim adopted him he had to have a collar removed by the vet not only because his fur was matted around it, but because it had become embedded in his neck. "Someone" apparently thought it was a good idea to put a collar on a feral (at lease semi-feral) cat, and no one saw it again until he was trapped.
His foster mom took good care of him and his wounds physically healed but he never let anyone touch his neck.

Like many socialized ferals Happy Boy loved his two people, Kim and Shannon, but was rarely seen by anyone else who came to their house. I only caught a couple of glances at him when he would be brave enough to come look at us (company) through the stair rails. And if he caught you looking at him for too long or saying his name he was gone like a shot! I did get to see pictures, though. He is a gorgeous hunka boy-cat!

Their appointment now is only 10 minutes away. Please light a virtual or real candle for Happy Boy that his passing be peaceful.
And for his people Kim and Shannon. They are going to miss him terribly.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
I'm so sorry Heidi.
for Kim and her daughter. It seems harder when it happens so suddenly.

Play happily over the bridge, Happy Boy. Whiskers will be happy to see you!

I'm so sorry. Sometimes in kidney failure it happens so fast...but at least there isn't a lot of suffering. I'm so glad he knew so much love.

I am so sorry for the loss of Happy Boy. Having been there with Max, I understand how awful it is when it is sudden. I hope their memories will bring them comfort.

How nice of you to post a tribute, Heidi. He sounds as if he was a very special cat that received lots of love and care

I just wanted to thank everyone who replied here. I printed out the thread and gave it to Kim this morning in an envelope so she could choose when she wanted to read it.

She thanked me for posting the tribute to him and her eyes welled up with tears. She said this has been really hard for her - he was her little boy; she was his #1 person. He would follow right on her heels and she played a game with him of walking faster or running between rooms and he would walk faster or run to keep up with her.

She said that their kitty Precious is still looking for him. :sniff: She said it's not often, but a couple-three times a day when they have a routine that would include everyone, especially morning and bed-time. Poor Precious.
