My little guy has actually never produced a hairball but the episodes lasts about 1 minute, the freaky part is how much noise comes through his nose like a horn. He swallows and gags alot like something is coming up, sometimes he has his tongue out. I rush to the petromalt, he eats it right away and that is always the end of it for at least a week.

This week though it happened twice, two days apart. It woke him up from his sleep. He is a single cat so he grooms himself alot and since the day he was found as stray he always breaths like a thick whistle through his nose so I guess it might not be that surprising to be hearing awful nose sounds with his vomit attempts? I asked the vet once long ago and she thought his nasal cavity maybe different enough to make sounds. Anyone else's cat do this?

Sure, they can get noisy when getting a hairball up. But that this keeps going on just means you're going to have to have the vet investigate it more thoroughly. If there's a hairball that's not coming up it can cause serious problems. It could even been respiratory issues, allergies, or since he was a stray at one point.. heart worm.

If your current vet isn't doing enough try another vet.
