Does anyone have a black cat that actually has a normal meow? Neither of mine do...one actually squeals (yes, like a pig, it's so cute!), and the other kind of whines like a puppy. And our friends who've had black cutes had the same issues. Plus, I know someone on this site has a black cat named Squeak because of it's meow. What's the deal with these cats?

We had several who had very LOUD or strident voices - including Inkspot who arrived on our porch as a tiny kitten. I looked down at this tiny little thing and a HUGE meow came out of its mouth.

Can't recall any of our black cats who squeaked, though.

Both of my cats do not meow normally. One is a black cat and one is a tabby brown. I talked to my friend and he said he actually had to teach his cats to meow (1 black 1 calico). So we decided not to teach them to meow normally, and just let them express themselves as they like.

So my black squeaks and my tabby "talks". My black also made a sound like talking under water. My tabby made a sound like "ah~ah~ah~"

That would be me! And that is a very good question! I don't know about your black cats, but I was watching Animal Planet/Cats 101. They profiled British Bombay, and I swear my Squeak is just like those cats! Are your black cats very dense/heavy for their size? Do they seek out heat sources like sun spots or your legs or lap? Do they play fetch? Do they have small feet and a long tail? Are they very muscular and can jump very high? I think all black short-hairs have very similar characteristics that resemble the British Bombay.

Kasey, our tortie, does not have what is thought of as a normal meow; she would never work in a cat food commercial

Her normal vocabulary is either/or, or a combination of eeps & squeeks and "maaaa".

In addition, when our silky terrier gets a bit too close to her food dish, she makes a noise that resembles a cougar snarl
(she has the classic "tortitude")
Needles to say, the silky rapidly retreats.

I can assure you they can meow normally. My black cat meows loudly frequently. She's the most 'talkative' cat I've ever met. My tabby on the other hand has a meow that typically sounds like a bicycle squeak or is sometimes voiceless--she can meow 'normally', she just chooses not to. It all depends on the cat, I guess

I watched Cats 101 about the black cat that rides along with the truck driver. Whatever kind of cat that was, that described our Darko almost to a T. Stinkpot, on the otherhand, is the high jumper and plays fetch, but he's got medium length fur and a very furry tail, so he's not a Burmese nor a Bombay (I guess)

I've had 2 black cats. The first one Mistoflees- meowed normally. It could be very LOUD sometimes LOL. Near the end of his life though, he'd wander around the house at night meowing- I heard that it can signal some sort of a problem (he died of kidney failure).

HollyHeart is my newest black cat. She's 6 months old. She has this churrp (and I'd never heard one before- not even from Sneaky my other female) that she does every time she sees Sneaky (maybe she thinks Sneaky's mom?)
The churrp is also done for me at times when she wants something.

Holly does have a pretty long tail. And she's long too (vs Sneaky who's short and chubby). She does jump, we had to pull the screens in the windows up b/c her new "trick" was to jump and hang on the screens

Paul says Half-tails meow sounded hoarse but I know she can meow normally(she did then entire 45 min trip to be spayed.) All the others can now but I didn't realize Nuts(brown/black tabby) could meow until Attitude went into heat before he meow sounded all strangled. Considering he sends most of his life talking I wish he'd just shut up and forget how to meow. Attitude who is black and white(as you can see from my sig she is a 'cow cat' more white than black) is just LOUD. Blue(Russian blue) had a cute meow, very quiet and unique.

Everyone here meows normally and I have 4 black cats. I think Sylvester(the name fits his coloring) can meow normally, I think.

My almost 17 year old black kitty, Katie, definitely meows normally - very loud and often too.
She's a tiny girl and I'm always amazed at the noises that come out of her.

Having 2 longhaired black cats of my own (they're in my sig) and two shorthaired balck cat strays we're taking care of, three of them meow normally (various pitches of course so one can tell them apart from the meows without looking).

The only one who has more of a whine then a meow is Luvbug - our biggest cat. It sounds so funny seeing a large cat having the smallest meow. The only time he has actually meowed is when my dad accidentally stepped on the tip of his tail (his tail is ok.).

Everyone else can meow, even my RB cat Sphinx (when he did talk - which was rare).

I'm glad so many of you have black cats - they tend not to be adopted. My first black cat had a high-pitched squeak for her normal conversational voice, my second one has a pretty normal meow but more often chirrs
and trills.

I have two black cats. They are brothers. One has a high-pitched, sweet mew that he doesn't use very often. The other has a more normal meow, but he also has a low-pitched, cross yowl that he uses when I am not sufficiently attentive enough to his varied needs. Neither of them meow very much, though. Maybe because it's just them and me.

My black cat Sylvia was very loud. She never meowed like normal-- it was always "no" or "now". Actually she acted/looked a lot like a Siamese cat.

My solid back Maine Coon Roxy doesn't have a 'normal' meow either, she has a little high-pitched voice and is very quiet. When she does make noise she usually chirrups or trills (or squeaks!) rather than meowing. However Maine Coons are known for that so it's not a 'black cat' thing in her case. Generally the closest she gets to a meow is "eh-ehw"

Tessie does not meow, it's kind of like a wine haha. I really don't know how to explain it but it's defiantly not a meow.

You need to know more black cats, you simply don't have enough to go on to assume they can't meow normally.
Most cats can and do meow normally, but they have their own meows for us. These will often sound squeaky, airy/faint, chirpy, or just what you'd call "cute". There's a very good reason for this - we respond to it. Cats have been using their meows to get what they want out of humans for a very long time.

I have a couple black cats currently, both have very normal cat meows. Though one actually sounds like he's saying meow.
