i have an older feral cat who lives in my yard. i previously neutered him a couple years ago but he has seemed ill lately so i trapped him and took him the vet. the vet removed an ear polyp and gave meds to treat a severe ear infection. ihave had him in the house for the past week to administer antibiotics and ear drops. needles to say, with a feral this has been rough on both of us!

i was only instructed to give one antibiotic pill a day (Claindamycin, 25mg) and 2-3 drops of Baytril in the ears 2x a day. he seems to be improving, but his ears keep producing a lot of a brown, waxy substance. I have cleaned it out a few times but it crops up in just a couple of days. from my research this sounds like a yeast infection symptom (it's definitely not ear mites, the vet checked).

so my question is, is there anything i can do to treat this yeast infection on top of what i am doing? i am afraid that once i release him his ears will just fill up with this gunk, and it will be a long time before i can catch him again. I don't want to take him back to the vet since this whole affair has been longer and more stressful than i intended.

I have read that some people treat fungal ear infection with a 50% white vinegar solution. is this a good idea? is there anything else I should try before letting him go again?

below is a pic of the poor guy (he had to be shaved for hair mats as well!)

To prevent this from becoming a chronic condition, I would recommend first trying to identify the underlying cause (ear infections not being overly common in cats) and evaluating treatment options from there. You said bacterial. Is the vet sure it isn't a virus? Structural damage to the ear drum ? Could his underlying immune system be compromised in any way ? Maybe it is FeLv or FIV for instance ?

When my cat had a yeast infection, my vet put this goopy medication in her ear canal. It was gradually absorbed by her body and we've not had another ear infection since.

do you remember what medicine the vet used? i'll have to ask about that.

the tough part here is that it's for a feral who lives outside. there are so many variables out there, i'm afraid he develop another polyp or something. unfortunately in all these years he's never showed any inclination towards becoming tame!

On my receipt, it's listed at BNT ear medication. It's a very thick ointment that stays in the ear for 2 weeks and is gradually absorbed and/or flushed out naturally. You want to be sure to have the ears thoroughly flushed and cleaned out before the ointment is applied.
