Left or right pawed?

They say that a cat can be either right-pawed or left-pawed, but how will you know if your cat is left or right-pawed?

I read somewhere that the dominant side is the paw they reach out with to touch something, or try to grab the food out of your hand.

I also heard somewhere that nearly all female cats are left pawed. Don't know why. Both my cats are girls and one is right pawed and the other is left.

Flash is right pawed (female)
Sooty is left pawed (male)
Smooch is right pawed (male)

Flash and Smooch are litter mates but live apart (for those that dont know)

I dunno if that holds true - Da Magpie tries to snag the treat bag with her right paw and also pats at my face with that one and I think Hissy is the same although it is hard telling on a fairly wild cat. Da Lip is left pawed but I havent paid much attention to what paws the other males use.

I have heard it said that cats in general are predominantly, but not exclusively, left-pawed, regardless of gender. It seems to be borne out in the cats who have shared my home - I think, to a cat, they have been lefties, in total 5 females and 2 males.

A good way to know would be to wave a toy or something in front of them like one of those toys on a string? Then see what paw they use to reach out to it first. Observe to see if they usually use this one paw or not. Cats definitely are left or right pawed just like us.

I'll try it. I want to if Charlie is left or right pawed
