new cat and resident dog

Hi Everyone,
I am new to the forum and we have an 8yr old boxer male that we have owned for 7 yrs. A week ago, we adopted a cat from a local cat rescue. We have never owned a cat so I did a ton of reading before we got her. We have my bedroom and bathroom completely blocked off with baby gates so she has a "safe area". The first two days she was here, we had the doors closed and so she and the dog never saw each other. Now they can see each other and she seems terrified of him, understandably. He is a very submissive male and has not barked or growled at her. In fact the one time she ventured out into the den while he was there, he immediately laid down with his head between his paws and just looked at her. She continues to shake and hiss and swat at him if he gets too close to the gates. So my question is this. Is there anything else I can do to make her feel safer or make the transition easier? I realize it has only been a week and will take time, I just don't want to be missing something obvious here. He sleeps in my daughter's room, so she has the run of the house at night and I have heard her go out and venture, she just seems to not leave our room much during any other time, even when he is outside. Thanks for any input and sorry about the long post.

Hello and welcome to the forum, and hurray for you for adopting from a rescue!

sounds like you ahve a good grasp on things. I recommend you add a feliway plug in or two to the kitty's living area to help her feel more calm and centered and settled.

Do you know anything about this cat's history? Hopefully she does not have any trauma in her past concerning dogs, and all you need is time and patience for things to work.

One way to help her adjust to the dog is to rub a shirt you have worn all over her, for her scent, then rub it on your dog, to blend all the scents together, then put the shirt under her food dish.

This will help her associate the dog's smell with good things (food), and safe things (you)

What is her name (and the dog's name?)

please keep us posted!

PS I would not recommend ever leaving the cat and dog out alone together, at least not for a very very long time, even after the integration is complete.

She is Muffin and he is Roscoe. She was in a shelter for 5 mos before being rescued and then was in a foster home for 2 before we got her. So she has an unknown hx but has done really well with our two daughters who are 8 and 3. Love the idea of the feliway plug, I will definitely get one of those. I also love the idea of the shirt with the smells under the food. She rubs her face on everything, including all of our faces and I had been wondering what that was about. Very cool about the pheromones. I have always had dogs my whole life so this is a new adventure for us. And we do plan on keeping her safe zone as hers only for good. So she will always have a spot to get "away from it all" , including dog and kids. Thanks for the great ideas.
