Moving w/ old cat

I have had my cat since 3rd grade and I am currently 25 now. I am moving out of my parents house next month and don't know if I should bring her along. I've moved before without her but it was for college and it was temporary.

She is 18 years old with severe attachment and anxiety. If I am not there she will cry all night and when I am home, she follows me everywhere. Since she is so old I'm scared if I move she will fall into a depression and die. However, I am scared to take her out of a home she's lived in for 18 years to a strange, new place. She is very sensitive and I am not sure which one will be more traumatizing for her. Any advice?

It sounds like the most important thing, for her, is to be with you. Are you going very far away? Will you have time to spend with her to help her get adjusted to her new home before you have to go to work? Can you bring at least some familiar smelling furniture with you?

It's a tough call, but if she pines without you, keeping her with you may be the most important thing, she may surprise you and adjust, since she is with you.

Install some feliway plug in diffusers in your new home and put furniture from the old home all in one room, and keep your kitty in the one room for a few weeks before letting her venture out to explore the rest of the new place.

PS Welcome to TCS! Please keep us updated. What's her name?

I hope the move goes well. Do you have any options? Would your parents let her come back if things don't work out well? If it were me, I would take my cat with me and do everything I could to work things out.

Thanks! Her name is Ellie. I am moving about 10 minutes away so I'd be able to visit her a lot, I'm just concerned about the night time because she sleeps with me. I am moving in with my fiance so I don't know how she'd feel about sharing a bed with him.
