As you know my friend and I went to the shelter in March and adopted a sweet Tortie he named Turtle. She was very sick and puny and he has literally "loved" her back to health. She is now a happy, bouncing and pouncing, adorable cat. My friend has a roommate, who has an older cat, Jamie. Now Turtle and Jamie get along (I think). They use the same litterbox and eat from the same bowl, even though they each have their own. Sometimes Turtle plays with Jamie a little too much and Jamie swats at her when she has had enough. But they don't fight. I think they are just working things out between themselves. You know, they're communicating.
THE PROBLEM IS THE ROOMMATE.
I just found out an hour ago that she has been SMACKING TURTLE when she thinks Turtle is bothering Jamie. Now, she says it's a little pat on the butt, but
I AM CRAZY WITH ANGER RIGHT NOW!!!
There is NO REASON in this world that I can justify smacking a cat. I mean "a little pat on the butt" is a lot different to us than to a little baby that has had such a rough start in life.
I have explained to her several "alternate" ways to stop undesirable behavior i.e. water bottle, a loud noise etc. But she has accused me of being a "nut"-bla bla bla....
As for my friend...I told him to "lay down the law" to his room mate. She doesn't need to be "disciplining" his cat! It's a lot easier to get another room mate than it is to get a sweet little kitty like Turtle!!
Ok, I needed to get this off my chest. I don't think I will go over there tonight and "smack" his room mate around BUT things better change or there will be HELL to pay.
You know, I have a red head's temper. When I found out about this at work, I was standing in a private dining room we have off of our larger main dining room. I became so furious I threw a chair across the room.

All my co workers ran for cover.

Turtle is very fortunate to have you in her corner. I feel your outrage, too. I hope you can do something to protect Turtle by either educating the roommate or urging your friend to boot her out, though I sure feel sorry for Jamie, the other cat.

You need to explain to your friend the negative consequences of allowing anyone to hit his cat. There are ways to redirect a cat from doing things (spraying with water can have negative consequences, too).
And he needs to understand and he needs to put a stop to this, immediately.

Someone has to stand up for Turtle. It has to be stopped.
I feel sorry for Jamie, too.

Thanks Otto! The room mate is very good to Jamie. How can people love their cat, but not love ALL cats? I don't understand, yet, I too feel sorry for Jamie.I could take Turtle out of that situation until my friend got his priorities straight

If you have to, to protect her, do it. I hope it doesn't come to that because I'm sure that would upset Turtle, but better than her being hurt.

Good for you!! Too many people just let things go!! I would feel the same way.

You can be her advocate. Honestly, people make me sooooo mad!

You right Pami, They both need more education.Just telling the room mate, or threatening her isn't going to help Turtle or ANY future cats she may have. I have videos and I have books that could help them. Is this a good beginning? I can't talk to her right now because I will end up in jail

This is so true!! Lack of education is why there are many social issues. You are taking the right approach, educating them.
Not only helping Turtle and Jamie, but like you said, future cats, too.

Yes, that's the spirit! Waiting to get a grip on your horrified emotions, so you can think. Offering your assistance to help them learn how to let cats live together will be a terrific thing to do.

Keep us posted.

OMG what a
I cannot believe this, I have 5 kitties at present and there are always a bit of petty falling out between them, infact tonight Smartie came down and smaked Candy with her paw and then growled at her for no reason, most of the time they all get on fine but if they didn't have their "arguments" like humans I would wonder. I would NEVER resort to smacking, I don't even think its right in children, sometimes if my kitties get too carried away I do raise my voice and say "what you doing?" and thats enough. I am not suprised you feel the way you do, we all strive to save kitties from this behaviour and yet this situation has arose and all that Turtle has been through. I would have a strong word with her, how would she feel if your friend was to smack her cat? And if your friend smacked her she would go straight to the police-why is it ok to do it to a cat but not a human??
One rule for one hey. I hope this situation gets sorted out and soon. xx

How awful. This reminds me of a situation my cousin had with her then roomate's boyfriend. My cousin started to notice that her puppy acted afraid of the BF. So one day, she hid a tape recorder in the home to see what was going on while she was at work. On the tape, she heard the BF yelling at and beating her puppy! They had a big falling out at the time, but now she and the roomate are friends again, even though the roomate is now married to the dog-beating boyfriend. If I had been in that situation, the BF would be in jail (if he survived) and I would have had a hard time ever being friends with the roomate again.

I'm not suggesting you drop your friend, it's a totally different situation, but he needs to lay down the law to his roomate.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
Good on you for going to bat (hopefully not literally) for Turtle!

Do wait until you're less emotional, and yes, books, print-outs, videos - whatever - would be VERY helpful! This has nothing to do with you being some crazy cat person!!!!!!
