She is really disturbed by her tail! Hissing, growling, attacking it.

I'm fostering a cat for the rescue group I volunteer with. She got an URI and hated being in a cage, so I brought her home to get her well. I've noticed that every night she growls and hisses at her tail, runs around, and tries to attack it. She isn't playing. She looks genuinely disturbed by her tail.

I have a cat who used to do this. He had multiple breaks in his tail from before I got him. The vet told me that sometimes a break in the tail can cause nerve damage and lead them to act this way. He had to have half of his tail amputated and he had to take valium to calm a nervous condition that coincided with his tail problems. The girl I'm fostering also has a few breaks in her tail. They aren't as severe at my cat's breaks, but they're there. I'm wondering if she might have the same problem or if it could be something else.

She does it nightly, sometimes all throughout the night. I've yet to see her do it in the day. It seems worse when she's nervous about something.

Has anyone experienced something similiar? Any ideas what could be wrong with her?

Have you taken her to the vet to have her tail examined, just to make sure it isn't broken or injured or was in the past? An Xray could reveal past bone breaks that healed.

Sounds like she may really be in danger of injuring herself, so be sure to consult a vet about this.
