My first day at the shelter was certainly a moving one. It's a big Victorian style house with a manicured lawn. It looks like someone rich may have lived there a century ago. As I opened the door and crossed the threshold I thought I had stepped into my Heaven!! There were cats everywhere. Just roaming freely around their home.
I met with the director who gave me a tour. There is a beautiful sun porch connected to the back of the house. It was FULL of cat trees and kitty condos and cats of course!! I was shown the storage room full of litter and a variety of cat food. Then a smaller room when the "green" cleaning supplies are kept. They have an office upstairs for the vet and a little "sick bay" area. They even have a birthing room for the pregnant mamas to have some peace during birth. Now I know this isn't new to many of you guys, but I have to tell you that I was really impressed with the place!!!
Now, for the good part--the cats!!!! They currently have 37 felines
and they are all beautiful. But I already have a favorite named Inky-Dinky. A little boy, all black except for his white whiskers. He suffered some terrible abuse which left him without most of his tail and missing his left eye. But he certainly doesn't miss a thing! He began following me around the house as I started to clean the litter boxes. He would sit and watch as I went from box to box. What a funny boy! When I finally sat down for a minute he came right up to me and looped around my legs. I reached down very gently to give him a rub and off he ran!!!!
I did a lot of cleaning today. That's about it. I had a few minutes near the end of my day to visit with the babies. I just sat down in the middle of the floor and the braver/more curious cats approached me. It was wonderful.
Although many of them have been hurt and mistreated by "humans" they still seemed trusting. If I would have read about some of their terrible stories I would have been livid and full of hatred like I usually am toward people. But to see their strong spirits and will to survive was very powerful. To think that after all they had been through they could still greet me with purrs and a couple head butts is really a miracle
.
So that was my first day at my shelter. I don't know why i waited so long to do this
