There has probably been a thread like this before, but I decided to start a new one because I haven't seen a lot of discussion on books lately and I thought it'd be fun to start a new thread...

So I have some questions...

1. What is your favorite book of all time?

2. What if your favorite book that you've read purely for entertainment..I know some of us admire great literature works and would say one of those is a "favorite" but it's not a light read, and there is always the junk novels with no literary value which can be very enjoyable..so I am asking this question for those who have a literary masterpiece book as their favorite, just to get a sense of which easy read type of book they like also. This could be a book you've read among the many that really stood out to you even though you wouldn't put it in the same level as your favorite.

3. What is your favorite genre??

4. What is your favorite children's book?

And please, if you must, list multiple books and don't limit yourself to one!!! I can never have one favorite of anything and I assume others can be like that too

1. The Chestry Oak, by Kate Seredy. It's a kid's book and is out of print but is THE best ever. Seriously, find it, read it.

2. I like the Mrs. Pollifax series. They're very entertaining.

3. I don't know, really. I like kid's books. The Newbery winners, especially. Also light mysteries. But I'll read anything.

Oh children's books!!! That's cool now that you gave me this idea I edited my post to add that question about our favorite children's books because I know we've all read those

Is there any romance in the Mrs. Pollifax series? That sounds interesting, I LOVE books where the protagonist is a female
That sounds sexist unfortunately but it's true.

Okay time for me to answer my own questions

1. Favorite books of all time are mostly from Victorian literature...
Charles Dickens- Great Expectations, Jane Austen- Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte- Wuthering Heights..
I just fell in love with these books when I was in my pre teens. It was perfect reading for someone that age, not racy but still has that intensity...
Oh and another big favorite Little Women by Louisa May Alcott!!! I LOVE that book..

2. No surprise for those who have read some of my other posts- Charlaine harris' southern vampire series and Kelley Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series...just at the moment though I hope I find even more enjoyable ones to read.

3. My favorite genre is a mix of mystery and adventure and a little bit of romance thrown in.

4. My favorite children's book is an unpopular one in the US, but I didn't grow up in the US so didn't read the typical US children's books as I was growing up.
It's a series of children's books called "Emil i Lönneberga", the author is Astrid Lindgren.

1. What is your favorite book of all time?
well, i guess it'd be Gone With The Wind - i'm sure i've read it a couple of hundred times. i know it's over 100, but i stopped keeping track after that - but that was about 30 years ago, so i'm sure i'm over 200 by now.

2. What if your favorite book that you've read purely for entertainment?
almost all of my reading is for entertainment only. i recently was studying for a test, so i read some books to help with that... but otherwise, it's always for entertainment. i guess if i had to pick something in this category, it'd be the Harry Potter books. i often re-read that series when i don't want to start something new, but need something...

3. What is your favorite genre??
i like books in almost every genre, so i don't really have a favorite. i'm much more prone to favorite authors, regardless of genre. i have one author that has written mysteries, historical romances, fantasy & science fiction - i like all of her books, regardless of genre.

4. What is your favorite children's book?
for young children [pre-K thru 2nd-3rd grade] i like the SkippyJon Jones series - great illustrations, cute stories - plus, starring a cat as the main character! for older kids, [for reading on their own] i like the Time Warp Trio series - good for early readers [2nd-4th, easily].

ETA: btw, i'm familar w/Astrid Lindgren - i can remember reading Pippi Longstocking when i was a kid.

I had no idea she was the author of Pippi Longstocking!! That's another one of my favorite kids books

I actually had to look up Emil i Lonneberga to find out who the author is because I had forgotten...

My favourite book is "Memoires of a Geisha"

Closely followed by "The Lord of the Ring"

I've read both of those dozens of times.

My favourite genre are FBI thrillers.

My least favourite are romance novels.

My favourite children's book is "Alice Through the Looking Glass"

1. What is your favorite book of all time?

Non Fiction: When Rabbit Howls by Truddi Chase.

I, too, like "Little Women". Though its been many years since I read it, perhaps a visit to the library is in order

2. Not applicable.... none of my favs are literary masterpieces, and aside from schooling type books, I read for enjoyment purposes

3. What is your favorite genre??

Hmmm, I like fiction, more specifically medical thrillers or legal thrillers. I don't mean horrors (tho I do enjoy those as well) but rather the medical thrillers written by Robin Cook or Micheal Palmer..... legal thrillers by John Grisham.

Or you can flip the opposite way and go with Danielle Steele or Nora Roberts

4. What is your favorite children's book?

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

As a younger girl, I enjoyed Judy Blooms books.

If you like that genre you might try Yasmine Galenorn's books. I haven't read them as they are not my type of entertainment, but I know her personally, and she's got quite a following!

Your all time favorite classics are the same as mine, Love the Bronte sister's books, and love Jane Austen.

Favorite authors/series

Jean Auel Clan of the Cave Bear and all following (prehistoric)

Anne McCaffrey scifi/fantasy, Most of her series', but not all (I don't read the acorna books for example)

James Herriot, All Creatures Great and Small series,

Deric Longden who writes non fiction about his life as a writer living with his cats. They are fantastic and laugh out loud funny though difficult to find sometimes in the USA

Anne Tyler, contemporary fiction

The Arthurian Saga by Mary Stewart, The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, The Wicked Day

Favorite old authors, Louisa May Alcott, Mark Twain, Booth Tarkington and Paul Galico

Paul Galico wrote The Abandoned, that, while out of print, every cat lover should tract down and read

Gone with the wind by Margaret Mitchell

All these listed are favorite rereads that I own.

I love a lot of children's books and some of the old series, too. I practically learned to read on the "Narnia" books, my siblings and I were always fighting over possession of any given book at any given time. I like the Dicey Tillerman series and the companion books that go with it, by Cynthia Voit

You know Yasmine Galenorn??? OMG, I just reread "Witchling" last week and have been tearing the house apart to find the second book in that series over the weekend! When I first read the series about 4 years ago she had a fan forum that she actually came and posted on, which really impressed me. I can't find it now, but she's probably too busy. I just love her cat page on her website though!

All time favorite has to be "Gone With the Wind". I'm with Laureen, I can read that over and over.

For "fluff" reading...early Laurell K. Hamilton (Anita Blake, Vampire huntress series), Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and some Nora Roberts if I'm in the mood.

Favorite genre is supernatural/fantasy. Give me a vamp, werewolf or unicorn and I'm happy! I believe in all of them (or I should say I don't disbelieve in them).

For children's books, I loved the "Bambi" series (yes, there was more than one book), "The Black Stallion" series and "The Dancing Shoes".

Yaz's forum was hacked and she had to close it.
Not sure if she plans to try again, but of course, like you say, you can always follow her cats.

1. What is your favorite book of all time?

OK, all-time favorite is Huckleberry Finn. Although many schools no longer teach about it, it is almost certainly the "great American novel," and is, in many ways, too subtle for most modern readers.

2. What if your favorite book that you've read purely for entertainment?

The "Little Fuzzy" series, by H. Beam Piper. These are old books, over 40 years old now, but still in print. The values they teach are really great, and if you read it, you will love Little Fuzzy and all his Fuzzy friends.

The books:

Little Fuzzy, H. Beam Piper
Fuzzy Sapiens, "
Fuzzies and Other People, "
Fuzzy Bones, William Tuning (written when the third volume could not be found after Piper committed suicide)
Golden Dream, Ardath Mayhar (The Fuzzy story told from the Fuzzy viewpoint)

3. What is your favorite genre??

Science fiction.

4. What is your favorite children's book?

"The Manx Mouse," by Paul Gallico.

My favorite book of all time: Alice is Wonderland. Followed by The Lord of the Rings series. Followed by the Harry Potter series. I love Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, easily one of my favorite books.

Favorite authors include Laurell K Hamilton (Anita Blake series), Charlaine Harris (Southern Vampire), Shirley Rousseau Murphy (Joel Grey), Carole Nelson Douglas (Midnight Louie series), Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum series), Kim Harrison (Rachel Morgan series) anything by Clive Cussler, Stephen King, some Dean Koonz, Christine Feehan, Sherrilyn Kenyon, etc. I can go on and on with authors.

I can (and have) reread and reread the The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, and The Wicked Day all by Mary Stewart.

I'm a fan of science fiction and supernatural. I don't care for a lot of crime or murder....it gets old fast for me.

I read Pippi Longstocking when I was a child. Does anybody remember the Maida series? Maida's Little Shop, Maida's Little School, etc. I also read Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, the Trigger Berg series, etc.

I really have to look for some Kelley Armstrong books.

YAY another Paul Gallico fan!
It's a shame The Abandoned is no longer in print. I had to pay a small fortune to get a copy. It's a first edition, though that's not why I bought it, I just wanted a reading copy. Thomasina can still be found fairly easily.

I've also been looking for his book on Lou Gehrig.

I forgot about Mark Twain, Tom Sawyer is one of my favorite rereads. I can still remember how scared I was the first time I ever read it when I was about 10, when they are in the old house and Injun Joe comes in. I like Huckleberry Finn too.

My favorite book of all time is A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. I would love for a man to love me as much as Sydney Carton loved the woman he sacrificed his life for. I will always remember the final words he said just before he was killed...

"It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known. ” I have also seen the movie a number of times but nothing is better than the book.

James Patterson is my go to author for entertainment, also enjoy Danielle Steel and one of my new favorites Jodi Picoult.

For trash I read Jackie Collins
I never ever read children's books.

Funny thing I can watch a movie many, many times but could never read a book more than once, one time and I'm done.

I love most any book by Pat Conroy: Prince of Tides, The Great Santini, Lords of Discipline, Beach Music. One of my all-time favorites is A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving, and I love The Time Traveler's Wife. Although it's more of a play than a book, I've practically memorized Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

As a kid, I loves the Little House books, and Louisa May Alcott books: Little Women, Little Men, Eight Cousins, etc.

As a book addict, I can't honestly narrow down 1 & 2 because I can't pick any sort of favorite.

3) That one is hard, too. But I mostly prefer books from the new wave of science fiction and speculative fiction types of sci fi (hard sci fi is rather boring). I specifically collect books in this category - a lot of great anthologies were never reprinted and some authors have very little of their books in print in North America, so that adds to the fun of collecting 30+ year old books.

Other than that I like fantasy, and for several years read a lot of high fantasy books - though not as much now. I also like the popular urban fantasy/sci fi and some paranormal romance (which falls under urban fantasy/sci-fi, too, technically) - though the latter is fraught with authors writing drastically degrading as they run out of time and ideas because they signed on to too many multibook deals.

4) One of my favorite childhood books was Cat's Magic, which I think was by Margaret Greaves? It's very much out of print now (I would love to get a hold of a copy of it). Other than that I liked and had collected many of Marguerite Henry's books (I need to ask my dad's wife where those went...). For quite a while I rarely read any books that weren't animal related in some way - a strange offset to being a child that read newspapers, science, and history books at a very young age.

1. What is your favorite book of all time? The Three Musketeers by Alexander Dumas

2. What if your favorite book that you've read purely for entertainment? Island of the Blue Dolphins. Read this one in like 6th grade I think
I did really really enjoy The Three Musketeers tho as well as The Count of Monte Cristo. I also greatly enjoyed the Civil War series by Michael and Jeffrey Shaara; Gods and Generals, Killer Angels and there were a couple others. These books were written very historically factual, but at the same time written like non-fiction. I'm not a big fan of American history, but these books were amazing.

3. What is your favorite genre?? I like most genres, from classics to smutty romance
never been into horror tho

4. What is your favorite children's book? I think Island of the Blue Dolphins would fall into this category altho it is a good sized novel. I honestly didn't read a lot of "children's" books, I was reading 500 page romance novels by the time I was in 5th grade
