Does anyone have an E-Reader such as the Nook or the Kindle2? If so, what are the pros and cons of both. Which one do you prefer and why? I want to get one for my dad, but am still undecided as to which one would be better.

Well, I only have the Kindle, but I love it. You don't have to be hooked up to an internet connection; you download your books over a wireless network. It's AMAZING to read in bed, because it's so light and doesn't hurt my hands, plus I don't have to keep moving the book turning pages. It always opens up to the last page I read. Oh, and you can adjust the size of the print!!! I would also get one of their booklights because it's NOT like a computer that has backlighting, but I think it's easier to read.

I read ebooks on my ipod touch, I like how it's about the same price as the kindle and nook but you can do so much more with it than only read ebooks. There are apps for barnes and noble ereader, kindle, one called ereader as well as one called stanza which both let you read ebooks that you've downloaded from pretty much anywhere in any format...
And the same features apply you can adjust the font size, etc..

I love my Kindle (2), too, for all of the above reasons. It's extremely portable - I tuck it in my handbag whenever I leave the house. Some of my students really love the "read to me" feature, and I find the standard dictionary useful when reading older works. It's much easier on the eyes than a computer screen, and the booklight Kim mentioned makes it perfect for reading anywhere. There's a very large selection of books (not just from Amazon), many of them free. You can use Stanza to convert formats. It's definitely recommendable.

I have the nook from B&N and love it. It has the touch screen to navigate on the bottom, and the also is connected to its own wireless network. It also has Wifi internet connection too, a beta browser, and games with the software upgrade. I've gotten a few free ebooks for it, especially the classics. I enjoy it immensely!
The "real page" look to it still amazes hubby - he asked me when I got it, "is that even on??"

I was all set to purchase a Kindle when my husband bought me an ipod for Christmas. When I found out you could download books to your ipod I was thrilled. Now, I don't have to have multiple devices and bring my ipod wherever I go. Now I have my music, books, games, contacts etc. all on one small device.

I use an application called Kobo (they also have an ereader) and love it. I've downloaded three books, each one under $10. The latest book I downloaded is The Lovely Bones. I have no eye strain since you can adjust the brightness, colour of background, font size etc

I have a Kindle, but if the Nook had come out earlier I would have on of those instead. I LOVE the convenience of the Kindle!!!

I also have an iPod Touch, but I can't see the screen in bright sunlight. So if I'm waiting for DH at lunch or after work, I can sit outside on a bright day and read on my Kindle.

The e-Ink screen (the technology behind the Kindle, Nook and Sony e-reader screens) is amazing and only getting better.

The only drawback to the Nook or Kindle (and I think the Sony e-reader as well) is that they have a proprietary format, so you can only read it on that device, or a computer (or iPod, if they have an app). You can't move a book from the Kindle to a Nook or back, unless you strip the DRM from the file, which is illegal in most countries.

Good luck!

Around the bend!
I had the Sony Touch screen reader and loved it. even though you had to download the program for their book store and hook the reader to your comp to load the books, I still loved it. It froze up on me one day and I was scared it'd happen again so I took it back.

Bought the Kindle instead and love it just as much. The only thing I wish Kindle would do is let you get digital library books. I could do that with Sony and loved that part.

I will be buying the Borders Kobo ereader when it comes out next month. I am super excited! It is $150. I will be able to sync it with my smart phone, to download new books. Borders has a app coming out for various smart phones, including the google phones, and Iphone. I'm pretty brand loyal when it comes to Borders. I like the fact that you can put a Borders ebook on any device, not just the Kobo. I'll be able to read books on my phone and use my phone's wifi to download more books.

I ended up getting the Nook because it is the one my dad initially saw and told me he wanted. I hope he will be able to use it for a while. Thank you all for your input!

I love that Border's is doing that with the Kobo books! I think it'll be great marketing for them.

I just don't know how they can do that unless they have deals with each e-reader retailer, or if the books you download will be free of DRM (digital-rights management).
