Two deposits in my bedroom

I came home today to find two wet yellow deposits in my bedroom. My cats, who have been with me for about 14 months, have always faithfully used the litter box. So finding poop in my bedroom is really out of norm. For now, I'm chalking it up to an upset stomache for one of my cats. I don't know for sure who did it but one them is sleeping right now which is unusual. The cats are usually wide awake at this point.

I'm going to watch both cats carefully of course and if it happens again, it's off to the vet. But for now, is it safe to consider this a one-off and the cat may not have had time to reach the litter box because of diarrhea?

This stuff is so perplexing. My cats even when they were very sick always managed to get to the litterbox so this one is hard to figure. I always scoop in the morning so the box was clean when I left for work.

Definitely sounds like someone was sick. Was there any in the box at all? Kitty could be blaming the box for his/her discomfort.

Another take is, if you only have one litter box, you really should have at least three for two cats. Many cats prefer to poop in one and pee in the other, and some cats won't sue a box at all, if there is anything in it.

Or....one cat is barring the other from using the box at all. This also is not that uncommon and why more boxes are recommended, with at least one in a different place than the other two.

But, yeah it does sound like someone has an upset system.

I give cooked white breast of chicken when one of my kitties has diarrhea. I keep chunks of it stored in my freezer at all times. Take a chunk out let it thaw only slightly, then shred it into fine filaments. Still has ice clinging to it, so extra moisture, too.

Otto, I live in a small apartment and only have room for one litterbox--an extra large one I keep under the bathroom sink. I do make a point of scooping diligently. And so far it's worked for two cats. If there are sharing issues it would definitely be new. I'll keep an eye out for it. The box had a normal bowel movement in it along with two clumps--par for course during the day.

I would also assume that the cat did not have time to get to the litter box. You also mentioned "yellow" - was the color normal? If it happens again take a fecal sample to the vet - a little easier than taking the whole cat.

Unless your apartment only consists of one room, a bathroom, this is just plain untrue. Everyone uses this same excuse, get over it and put a litter box in the bedroom and living room area. It won't kill anyone and is better for a cat's urinary health. You can get creative and hide them partially behind a chair or whatever.

I have two in my den, one in the living room, and even one in my bedroom. The bedroom box is rarely used, but it's still there if they need it. As long as they're all scooped there's nothing to smell.

As for the stool color. If it passes through too quickly it can appear more yellow. It's just what bile does. Also using a more grainy food that's lighter can make for lighter stools. If it keeps up see a vet soon - though just one loose bowel movement isn't a worry.

It is not unusual for litter box sharing issues to arise at any time in a multi-cat household, regardless of the relationship the cats may have otherwise. For whatever reason, one cat may decide s/he is in charge of the litter box, no one uses it but ME.

Adding a feliway plug in diffuser can help, if you do see territorial trouble with the litter box, but at least two litter boxes really can make a difference. Another can be added in some quiet corner, or behind a chair, under an end table, or even under a cupboard, like the one in the bathroom, in the kitchen. If it's kept clean, it's not really a problem.

Well, let us know if one kitty turns up sick, so we can send some good TCS vibes.

I wanted to give it a few days for behavior to manifest before reporting. It does look like this incident was a one-off as litterbox behavior has chugged along per usual. So no need for vibes, but thanks for the offer!

I have 3 moggies and although not from the finest of breeding I wouldn't swap them for any of the best bred cats around.

Ninj, a very smoochy persian ginger, has had his fair share of tangles with the resident possums, costing a bit in vet bills to repair a badly damaged tail and underbelly not once but a couple of times.

Scrag, an unfortunate looking black cat whose face resembles a cross between a bat and a fox, is a rather timid cat. He was born in one of my draws and loves to hide away in any dark place, usually under the bedspread or tucked down between the cushions on the couch. It a while to solve peeing problems & to be able to even pick him up or to stroke his head but now he comes searching for attention and insists on sleeping snuggled up as closely as possible to me on my bed at night. But he doesn't abide visitors well and scatters post-haste if guests come calling.

Luey, a gorgeous tabby cat, is also very affectionate and loves to rub around my legs when I'm hanging the washing out. He would like to spend more time indoors but is regularly ousted by Scrag who jealously defends what he thinks is his territory.

I think all cats love and respond to a touch of TLC and with a bit of patience even the most timid of cats can be won over & trained.

I can tell you my 3 mogs took a bit of work and understanding before I got to know their personalities. I've enjoyed watching their characters unfold.

I think the secret to understanding my cats came by gaining outside information on the health and care of cats which has been really helpful. Sometimes just a small bit of information is all that you need to teach and understand your cat better. Believe me this will make all the difference to your relationship with your moggie.

I've attached some books which you may find of interest.
