So i recently brought home a senior kiity from the shelter i work at. Our vet tech had him aged at 5-7yrs. but when i took him the my vet she said he was a teenager. He really really likes his moist food, and really only nibbles on the dry food (chicken noodle). I was buying taste of the wild for him, but he eats almost two cans a day, and my hours have been cut in half. So i'm looking for a cheaper canned food thats still going to give him good nutrition, Ant suggestions? I can't see feeding him friskies as his main diet.

The canned food we feed is Wellness (now comes in larger cans for savings), Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, Max Cat, and Iams (lamb/rice only).

The Max and Iams are the cheaper ones. We also supplement with raw 2-3 times a week to help stretch food and feed Blue Buffalo dry.

I have 2 cats right now (another Oci will be joining us by next spring).

If he'll eat re-heated food, then buying larger 13 oz cans will help save $$. My guys really like Eagle Pack Holistic (tan cans), which cost about $2 for me. They've also grown to like the Felidae in the big cans, I can't remember what they cost though.

Congrats on adopting an older kitty.
Depending on where you shop you can find Nutro Max Cat canned food at a good price. The ingredients are good and there is a good variety of flavors. There are pate style and chunks with sauce styles. My Chester Cheetah is a chunks & sauce guy. He just has never liked the pates, but I have heard many other cats do. My guy is just an 11 year old stinker!

Enjoy your newest addition!

His absolute favorite is Friskies Lamb and Rice for Seniors...it's the only non-pate one he'll eat...at least at the shelter...is there anything like it in a better quality food thats not gonna kill my bank account?

Do you have a rough idea of a price per can, or price per ounce, that is "affordable" to you?

Nutro, Chicken Soup, and NutriSource are three canned foods I can think of off the top of my head that are decent priced. I pay $.80 for a 5.5 oz Chicken Soup. Nutro I think is under a dollar a can of the 5.5 oz? Can't remember right now. NutriSource is somewhere around a dollar a can, which I believe are 6 ounce cans?

The Friskies cans are $.40 for 5.5 ounces. I know it's not that good of a canned food, but he really likes it, should I even bother to find him another food he'll eat?

Do you live near a Pet Smart? I know there are members on this board who like their store brand, Authority. (I don't buy it very often myself, but only because my picky guys will only eat one flavor.)

With an older kitty Give them what they want even if it is friskies as wet food grows in need with an older kitty...

Please dont just use senior... unlike dry foods most senior wets are nearly identical to the adult versions..

I do this with every kitty ... Buy a few cans of every brand you can find and try

Congrats on your new kitty.

I give my oldest pretty much whatever he wants. On dry food I've been able to find something higher end he likes, but when it comes to canned food - it better say "Purina" on the label.
He kind of switches around, we feed Fancy Feast right now. He gets bored eventually, so we'll switch to Friskies or Pro Plan for a while. There are so many lines and flavors between them all I can keep him interested in eating.
I don't know what it is about Purina, but he LOVES their canned food.

well right now i've made the switch to go entirely with wet food. this website was a big help. The main site where i got this recommended that 50% protein, 40% fat, and max 10% carbs was optimal for wet food

http://binkyspage.tripod.com/CanFoodNew.html

I don't know how many of those have larger can sizes. I wish there were more brands that were tested cuz I could sure use something a little larger so save some money.
