Someone actually needed to study this?
I can ignore my cats. I feed them when it's meal time and because it's meal time, not from any of their whining. I have no response to babies other than being extremely uncomfortable/near pain from the cries they make.

As for the cats not meowing to each other. That's completely bogus - even ferals will make some noise at each other. Whoever came up with that solution doesn't live in a home with multiple cats. Mine are constantly meowing at and to each other. Just a few nights ago Blasa woke me up by meowing loudly - she was searching for her sister who had found a hidden sleeping spot. Tomas and Blaan make all sorts of weird noises at each other when playing.

I'm totally on board with that study.

Mine never meow to each other - they sniff, lick, chase and occasionally hiss at each other, but no meowing. My girl always had a menu of vocal sounds for me (including the I'm a poor little girl mew that always gets me out of bed - she definitely works her way up to that one, but it never fails her), but my boy never vocalized much until he noticed I paid attention to her meows. Now, he'll meow, but only to me.

^I'd say I must have an odd household, but I've heard ferals hrrmm at each other in greeting, the neighbor boy cats mew and hrrmm at each other, and Boo my semi feral meows at other cats. I've also had neighbors outside cats mew through the front porch window at my cats.
The inside cats have very different meows for each other. Blaan and Tomas don't use that talking meow they have with humans.
