Happy Cinco de Mayo

Today is Cinco de Mayo...

Do you do anything different? How do you celebrate if you do?

At work, we will have a salsa contest. (Not the dance
) Three years ago, I entered the most authentic and won first prize. It was the first time I had ever made salsa and got the recipe online.

Last year I didn't win anything (the before they didn't have one) but I am entering again this year. They don't have categories this year like before but I am hoping to win again! I have tweaked and improved the recipe over the years where the people on my team demand I bring my salsa for every potluck we have!

Prizes are gift cards from Wal-Mart. $40 for 1st, $20 for 2nd and $10 for 3rd.

I don't go to a Mexican restaurant, that's for sure!

Actually, tonight is my salsa class. But, the teacher (and the dance) is Cuban, so no celebrations there. Later, I have a second date with a man I like.

I usually go out to a fabulous Mexican restaurant called Superior and partake in their celebration. Lots of salsa and yummy food and LOTS of margaritas.
.

BUT, finals are next week and I need to be studying, so I'm skipping this year.

I myself do not celebrate it but I know of at least one Mexican restaurant who has a big thing going on outside on this holiday. I happened to be there a couple of years ago on this holiday and there was a big to do outside, looks like people were having a lot of fun.

We celebrate Cinco de Mayo a bit differently at our house. Today is the anniversary of when our DD came to us from Bulgaria and DH & I became parents.

It's a US holiday
Well, it's supposed to be Mexican but it's celebrated in the US more than in Mexico...

My friends are getting a piñata and probably going to drink some Corona

Well, I didn't win anything but ate a lot of salsa. The one that won had avocados in it. There was one that everyone was talking about and daring people to try. It was HOT HOT HOT!!!! I think the guy that made it just pureed a lot of habenero peppers or one of the really hot ones with some onion and other spices.

Rigel, can you send me some good recipes for salsa? I want to try something different next year.

I never heard of it either, so I certainly don't do anything any different.

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza SeguÃ:censor:n. It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States. While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance and celebration nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed nationwide in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.[10]

Uno mas cerveza por favor!!

For those that haven't heard of it, Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico's victory over the French way back when. It is mostly celebrated in the US though - go figure! haha

We went out for margaritas and mexican food. They had a mariachi band and lots of freebies - necklaces, tequilla shots and glasses, etc. It was fun.
