Hyperthyroidism in an obese cat

Jack had surgery last week to remove a fibrosarcoma. His initial bloodwork indicated a thyroid issue so a T4 test was done and apparently Jack has hyperthyroidism. Jack is quite fat, beautiful coat, has no excessive thirst issues, and is not lethargic (well, he is now but he's recovering from surgery).

The vet mentioned that this was all very odd because he isn't presenting with typical symptoms at all. We have an appointment on Monday to have Jack's stitches removed and we'll discuss this further.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

I have had two HT cats. I noticed Arthur was loosing wt and had become more vocal and hungry.

Maybe you have caught it at the very beginning before symptoms really become obvious? That would be my thought. Or maybe the test was faulty. Gosh, I don't know what to tell you.

HT is not too difficult to treat. Regulating his meds till he stabilizes is a challenge sometimes. But, Arthur is playful and happy. So you just do your best.

Let us know what the vet says.

Jack had his follow up appointment today. No more stitches, hooray! It was a trying week getting him to leave them alone.

I'm probably completely butchering this because I left my paperwork at home, but there were two values he was tested for T4 and I think the vet said T4 free? In any event, one was normal and the other was high. Because Jack presents with no symptoms we're going to wait a month or so and retest.

His potassium is low so I need to add a powder supplement to his food. That should go over well!

Well, I guess a month will tell more.

These darn cats are sooooo smart. They can tell when you add a tiny pinch of something to their food!

Good luck with the powder.
