A brief trip outside...

Hey everyone. Longtime visitor, first time poster to this site. I actually just registered on the forums to post this!

First, a little background in case that helps.

I have two cats, an 8 year old, and a 6 year old, both females. We got each of them when they were kittens.

Zoe is our 8 year old. We adopted her after she was abandoned and ended up under our stairs! Jasmine we got from a shelter about 2 years later.

We think Jasmine is dominant, though Zoe has no problem taking her down if she's annoyed enough. They are both inside cats, they always have been. This evening when we got home, Zoe must have slipped out behind one of us. When we got ready to leave, I heard a cat meowing outside the door and opened it up to find her. So she was outside for about an hour and a half.
Since then, she's just been randomly laying down in strange spots. She let me pick her up and hold her. She doesn't appear to be injured at all, though now and then I think I smell something strange. My guess was just that she was really scared and is trying to calm down. Within the past 15 minutes or so she is back to walking around in whichever room we are in and meowing at us, which is pretty normal for her.

Jasmine, however, is not taking it well. She's following Zoe around, hissing at her (and us), and generally just 'stalking' Zoe. We're trying to calm her as well, but she's not responding well. I'm just sure if Zoe encountered another cat while out there.

So, sorry for the long post, but we're a little concerned. We've decided to stay home for the evening just to monitor things. Still, we were wondering if anyone has any ideas. I suppose this could be good practice for us. We have a baby arriving in a month, and Jasmine is the one we've been most concerned about.

Thanks, everyone!

Hello, and welcome to the site! Sounds like Jasmine is upset because Zoe smells different after being outside. In our case, this has always worked itself out in time, but a day or so ago someone else posted on here suggesting doing the whole re-intro thing, exchanging scents, etc.

Good luck with the kitties, and with the baby too!

I was thinking the exact same thing. Zoe seems to have picked up unfamiliar scents from being outside, which is pretty much unavoidable. Even if she didn't encounter another cat, some cats are very sensitive about any scent changes and if neither one is accustomed to going outside at all then it may mean Jasmine isn't used to any of what Zoe picked up. Just walking on the ground probably gave her a new scent.

Probably this will wear off after a few days, but watch them till then to make sure no one gets injured.

Thanks.
This is pretty much what I was thinking, but I wanted to get some other thoughts as well. Zoe seems to be fine now, she just keeps sitting at the door and yelling to go back outside. Jasmine hasn't hissed yet today, but she still seems very wary.
Anyway, thanks for the replies.
