If one has a cold, keeping them separate is important, I know ... but ...
1. what/or how much do you do to disinfect the areas where they are ?
2. how long does the cold germ last once it's sneezed on the floor or wall or ?

I've search the net, guess I'm not googling the right phrase or words, so here I am ...

Gray has a cold, think he got it from one of my inside cats after he went to the vet for another issue -or- picked it up from the vets.

Simon - inside cat is the last one of the three inside cats still sneezing and on antibiotics (Azithromy). Gray is also on this antibiotic - today is the last dose for both of them.

Gray is in the laundry room, and during the day his area is expanded a little more in to the foyer, and Simon - with the other two cats - is in another part of the house. Right now Gray isn't active so keeping him in his area isn't a problem - and, the other cats don't want to be social with Gray - so I'm doing okay keeping them apart even though they are basically sharing the same air.

Now - for the clean up and prevention - any suggestions?

thx,
g

I have a cat quarintined the the basement currently, URI, kitty cold. The other cats have not shown signs of sneezing.

I read online to dinsinfect with colorox mixed 1:32. I have been mopping frequently (every other day, the house is so clean) with colorox mixed like it says on the bottle: 3/4 cup to one gallon.

I use one of those cotton rope string mops (the one that screws on to the pole). The only place that sells them is Wal-Mart. I mix up the colorox in a bucket and wipe down everything, vaccumn and go back and mop. After all that cleaning the rag and mop go into the wash.

I was online at Amazon.com and found this:
3 Pack Enisyl-F Oral Paste for Cats - 300 mL
I think I want to give it a try.

The vet recommened giving all my cats two dosages of 500mg l-lysine (am & pm).

I was posting here very recently about Pumpkin, she refused to eat and we finally got her eating by steaming shrimp, she now eats anything, as long as it has some form of shredded shrimp included.

Good Luck and I hope all your kitties live healthy/happy nine lives!

I have 2 cats. One of them has feline herpes and usually gets an URI at least once a year or so. I don't do anything to disinfect or separate them and my other cat has never gotten sick. I'm sure this isn't what you wanted to hear, but if your other cats haven't gotten it by now, they probably aren't going to get it.

stephanietx, the vet told me that disinfecting was a good idea. However, he said that the other cats have already been exposed to the URI and will probably not have another outbreak, as long as they are healthy.

I think that Ms. Pumpkin probably had an URI outbreak because she may have been slightly stressed by the addition of the shelter cat, Ms. Nibbles.

My house is very clean and I am glad that I put some nervous energy into cleaning and organizing! It is spring here and some spring cleaning is in order. Just call me Martha Stewart.

I think that everybody has got to do what is right for them. We have 4 cats here and it is important that we keep everybody calm and happy.
