Does anyone have info about post-nasal drip in cats?

Possum's coughing started in October, when he came down with calici virus as a kitten. He had bad coughing spells every day for about a month. After he recovered, he still had occasional spells, maybe once a week, through about February. He'd wake up coughing from a sound sleep, and then crouch and cough for up to 30 seconds (it seemed like an eternity). It would freak him out — and me! But by March, it seemed to have stopped.

But he's had three coughing spells in the past week. He just tested negative for heartworms and lungworms, hooray. He's an indoor cat.

Our vet thinks it probably isn't allergies; we only had a quick conversation on the phone, so I didn't have a chance to ask why she thought that. But she said it might be a lingering effect of the calici virus, or it could be post-nasal drip. Does anyone have other suggestions?

I'd be grateful if anyone has any experience to share.

Also, how can you tell the difference between coughing and unproductive retching (as in hairballs)? It seems to me that coughing is more violent — is that really so?

He does have a very cold, very wet nose, especially when he's purring! Thank you for your thoughts!

My vet calls the unproductive retching that you see with post nasal drip "exaggerated swallowing". The kitty sticks their neck out and does like a really big swallow. It's strange to describe. I know I've heard a cough, but can't remember what it's like at the moment.

I'm not much help am I?
