Normally, I don't bother with photographing squirrels, there's just soooo many of them around here. But this little guy...all the other scattered, but he just sat there watching. I even lay down on the boardwalk just a few feet from him and he just stared back, would forage a little, nibble a little, then stare some more. Inside the park, no one bothers them, and apparently he was quite aware of that. So, when he struck this little pose, I just had to take his picture. Isn't he a little ham.

He looks really smart Mike.

This clarity in this shot is amazing.

I really like squirrels, even though some call them "rats with bushy tails." In Denver, where I grew up, they're extremely common and friendly. We have a lot of them here, too. I always feel bad when I see one hit out in the road; they seem to be soooooooo bad at crossing streets!

My favorite is the kaibab squirrel, out in Arizona.

But the little ground squirrels in California are SO funny, and so fast we called them "afterburner squirrels."

Nice. In 2005, when I lived in a different county, Penny had a Mexican standoff with a squirrel who had attitude. The squirrel sort of "charged" Penny (well, it was more like lunge 2-3 inches, but still) I was like "Whoa."

see, THIS is why I leave a fresh large ground container of water daily spring through fall in my backyard next to the birdbath..watching these squirrels daily drinking gives me (as well as my cats) the giggles..(also good drinkin' for the outdoor/stray kittehs and other assorted wildlife passersbys in my neighborhood)

Aww, he's a cutie!
So many of the squirrels around here are spoiled rotten from people handing them peanuts...they'll take 'em right out of your hand. If you laid down to take a picture of one around here, he'd probably scamper over to see if you had anything in your pockets for him.

Great picture Mike. He's a real handsome fella!

When I lived on the ground floor many years ago in downtown Toronto, I had one squirrel that would come in my open window and eat peanuts off my table which I had placed right under the window. The first time my FIL visited and was sitting there with his morning coffee, the squirrel almost gave him a heart attack.

I remember those little guys from California, they were so cute. And yes, fast. They'd be outside those burrows just standing around, till you take a step toward them and poof...they'd be gone.

Awesome picture Mike! That little guy certainly knows how to pose. That should be in a magazine.
Squirrels are great entertainment value, well worth the cost of seed IMO. My boys get hours of stimulation watching the ones who come to visit our balcony.
Those Californian squirrels are cute too. We stopped at a scenic spot on the coastal drive there and the squirrels were so tame that they ate out of our hands.

Oh yes. Technically, they are still gray squirrels as far as identification, but they come in black, white, gray, and sometimes something that looks a little like strawberry blond.
