How can I confine my three kitties to the yard?

Hello all,

Some neighbors are complaining about our three adopted cats who have been using their shrubbery as litter boxes. I can certainly sympathize with the neighbors and told them would restrict our cats. I don't yet know how. At this time we are keeping them confined to inside our house.

How about "electric" containment fences for cats? Do they work? There are some available on the Internet. But on reading the reviews (as always), some praise them and some say they do not work really well. Any comments and information would be very much appreciated.

The only other alternative I can think of is to have a rather high vinyl fence installed around the patio. It would take about 46 feet to enclose the patio. That isn't an awful large amount and probably affordable. We could fence in the whole back yard but that would involve the removal of a great deal of shrubbery, small trees and would require about 300 feet of fencing.

Does anyone think vinyl fencing would work? I have an acquaintance that has one. I think it's about six feet high and has a slick vinyl surface and it works fine for her.

Thanking all in advance for any comments, suggestions, etc.

I don't know where you live, but if you want your kittens to live long and full lives, keeping them inside is just about the only way to insure that.

an enclosure is the safest bet if you are letting them outside, there are various homemade and commercial ones that members have, if you search for enclosures you can see which one will suit you best.

Having said that, I agree with mrblanche that keeping them inside is best for them

Another recent thread about such, with some tips/suggestions.

You can also get kits with everything you need in them, such as purr-fect fence.

Whatever you use needs to be curved inward at the top to prevent the cat from getting over it. Some cats can jump nearly 6ft with a running start. So it's not impossible for a cat to make the jump and pull themselves up over a straight fence.

Here is a link to the enclosure I built.

IMO, the invisible fence is worthless. Even *if* (and I stress if) it keeps them in, it won't keep any predators out. There have been quite a few threads lately about outdoor enclosures with tons of good advice, ideas, & suggestions - I'd try searching for some of them.

My cats use an enclosure only when they go out. When the weather's nice, they love it. It's made of wood beams and chicken wire. It has a top, because believe me they WILL climb. Especially if something spooks them. Also like someone else mentioned, it's important for keeping predators out.

Some tips I've learnt: NEVER put food out for them in the enclosure! It could attract predators. But put water there for them.

Be prepared for snow and leaf removal off the enclosure roof unless you make a fancy slanted roof with plastic over it or something.

It needs careful upkeep--watch for any holes working their way into the wire.

That would also bother me to find cat feces in my garden, as we grow veg in our yard.
Thank you for being such a considerate neighbor!
Maybe this fence will work:http://www.purrfectfence.com/
Or this enclosure: http://cagesbydesign.com/t-suncatchercat.aspx

Do a Google search for "cat fence". You will find several companies that sell fences that will keep a cat in.
