Max's cough lasted for about two months. The first month he would have coughing fits a couple times a day. The second month they spaced out to every few days. At first his cough was wet sounding but then it seemed like he was clearing his throat.
My vet said the same thing about lung worms that they are rare and hard to test for, Max is an indoor only cat but I had taken in two feral kittens last summer so he decided it would not hurt to treat him. I believe the name of the worm med was profender. The vet also put him on antibiotics. The meds did not seem to improve his cough which is why I thought it was a kitty virus.
Max is the oppisite of your Helen he has so much hair we call him wilderbeast cat. I was hoping it was a hairball and also treated him with hairball meds which did not work either. At least that is one thing you can rule out!
If Helen improved with steroids I would be concerned about asthma, not sure how the pollen count is in your area but here in Jersey the allergies are aweful. I know people who have allergy induced asthma I wonder if cats can have the same. If the cough starts to get worse I would ask your vet about a long lasting steriod, mine gave Max a shot of that and said if it were asthma he would improve quickly.
I hope she continues to feel better, I can't imagine how scary that must have been for you! If only these cats knew how much we worry about them!
