Windows Registry

I've been having a problem with trying to install or even play cd-rom games on my computer. I've been trying to load Rome: Total War Gold Edition w? Barbarian Invasion expansion and I have been getting the following message:

This application has failed to start because MSS32.DLL was not found. Re-installing this application may fix the problem.

Can I do this using the Windows XP cd? How would I go about this? I have clean 160 GB hard drive in my closet if it would be better to just do a clean windows install. I could use the additional space, anyway.

If it is just the one, you can download just the dll file

I downloaded the file, but what do I use to open it with?

Here is where you can download it from - at your own risk of course:

Double-check your Windows folder to make sure the file isn't there already. If it isn't then put it in your Windows/system32 folder, reboot and you should be good to go.

I didn't see the file in the Windows folder. I think I'm going to wait and just buy a new computer. I have quite a bit left from my financial aid for this term so I'm leaning towards using the money on finally buying a new system. Despite a few hardware and software upgrades this computer is 8 years old.
