New kitty pooping on the rug

Hi all
I took in a lost kitty a couple of weeks ago, he is about 5 months old, I put up posters, contacted shelters and put an ad in the paper to try and find his owner with no response. He is very skinny and was starving (not for long) well looks like he's here to stay, health check is fine and just waiting a few weeks to have him fixed as they have to be 6 months here, my other cats have accepted him brilliantly he has really slotted into place. The problem is he keeps pooping on my rug and this morning when DH came down under my kitchen table was swimming with wee, all my other cats use litter trays no problem and he has been using his fine up until now. DH never wanted another cat and because of this he is not happy at all. We may be moving in a few weeks and DH has said if Felix is still messing he doesn't want him :-( as he doesn't want the new house messing up. I just don't know what to do, I have shown him the litter tray and like I said he can use it fine, I keep the trays scooped reguarly and clean them out reguarly. I am wondering if when he is altered he may be better? I just don't know what to do, I don't ever want to consider giving him up but if he continues it will cause arguments with DH and I. If anyone has any suggestions please tell me, thanks. x

Did you add a box when he arrived or has he been using the established cat's boxes? You may need another litterbox. He may be meticulous about having his own, or the other cats might not like him using it and he has no other place to go. It may also be a matter of him not being able to wait if someone else is in the box at the time he needs it.

He may also have an urinary tract infection (UTI). I'd double check that first but add a new box. They may all end up using them all but at least there won't be anyone "waiting in line."

Good luck and bless you for taking him in.

Its a fresh box, I will get him checked for uti's, he has had diarroheah but that is clearing up now. I am just hoping it will stop soon, I keep taking him to the litter box to make sure he knows its there. I am quite lucky really that the other cats have accepted him. x

Also, where are the boxes located? Have you cleaned the areas with enzymatic cleaner?

Remember, little ones may not be able to make it to the litter box cuz when they gotta go, they gotta GO...NOW! They're so much like little kids when you're potty training. Get some of the disposable (aluminum) cake pans and use those as litter boxes for him and place at least one in every room in your house. You might also try the Cat Attract litter for kitties to see if that will help, too.

There is actually a Kitten Attract version of Dr. Elsey's excellent product. He may also be more stressed out than you think... so you can always add Feliway to the mix.

I don't know if they do a catattract litter over here, I will have to look into it, he has only done it twice since the other day and I told him off and then showed him the litter box. I will have to try feliway aswell, its just my hubby, he blames me as I took him in and he begrudges spending money on a cat he doesn't really want (he is not the greatestof cat lovers). x

Scolding the kitten isn't going to help, their not like children. As soon as you see he's going to squat, just quickly pick him up gently and place him on the tray.

Is he shouting in front of the kitten, because that won't help either.

Has the vet checked to see if he's chipped?

Is there a specific place or places where he usually seems to poop? Put a litterbox there, and see how he does with that. He would be attracted to the scent left behind on the floor by now, as well as habit, if this is the case.

And, maybe, let your husband know in lots of ways how much you appreciate his patience with the new kitty and how it makes you love him even more - it might soften him up even more toward the new arrival. You know, that you know he's trying hard to be patient because he loves you, and you really do notice and you know it's hard for him.

How far away from the litter box is he pooping? Also, was he a stray? Sometimes strays need a little potting soil in their litter box as that is what they are used to going in.

Scolding him isn't going to do anything but create more confusion and stress for him. He is obviously very stressed and uncomfortable, even though it may seem that all other cats and other family are excepting him, he isn't feeling this way. You even mentioned your hubby isn't supporting a new kitty to the home. DO you know for a fact that he is the one pooping outside the box? Do you know for a fact he was the one who peed under the kitchen table? He really should be kept separate till he can be neutered, especially in a house full of cats and others and you have to wait till he is 6 months?

I think in England, especially smaller areas, the vets are still going with 6 months rather than 2 pounds.
