I was wondering if anyone might know when u can treat kittens for fleas? My kittens are 5 weeks old now and I found a flea on one of them..are they to young to treat? Also what would be a good cheap flea treatment? We have the momma cat, 5 kittens, another cat who is pregnant..so the cheaper the better. In the past I used frontline for our cats and dog. But with an extra 5 kittens and funds are low I was hoping to find out if there is a good cheap flea treatment out there

The cheaper flea treatments are quite toxic. I wouldn't use them on any pet, but especially baby kittens. You can split a larger dose of Frontline for several of them, that will bring the price per pet down.

At 5 weeks old the only thing I'd use would be a flea comb. I think Frontline is for 8 weeks and up.

Please don't risk their health with cheap treatments. They are no good.

Ask the vet or visit the websites for flea control.

Definately, use a flea comb.

I rescued a litter of kittens several yaers ago about the same age and they also had fleas. My vet had me give them a bath in the original blue dawn dish soap. I put about three inches of water in my kitchen sink with a few drops of the dawn then I rinsed them. The important thing is to keep the kitten warm so as soon as a kitten was rinsed we wrapped them in a warm towel for a few minutes to dry. The dawn will not kill the fleas but it stuns them so the next step is to use a flea comb and to comb the kitten. Since the fur is still a little damp it is easier to see them and i had a bowl of water i would dump the flea in as soon as I found them.

The adult cats need to be treated with frontline and any other pets in the house. My other advice is to vaccum often, if you have a vaccum with a bag get a flea coller and cut it into smaller pieces to put into the vaccum bag so any fleas in the bag are killed. It was quite a process but it worked. The dish soap must be the blue original dawn only, the vet said any other soap can harm the kittens. We had a box with a heating pad and a towel over it, we washed one kitten at a time and put them in the box to stay warm until they were dry. Good luck!

You can sprinkle diatomaceous earth around your whole living area. It is totally safe for animals and people. It must be the human/food grade DE though. You should be able to find some at your local tree/plant nursery and if not you can find it online and order online. I got a container about 1 litre size and it has lasted me for several years. When I had an ant infestation it cleaned them out within a few hours. You can even rub a bit down into the fur on your kitty. It doesn't kill the fleas on contact but they will die after it gets on their outer skeleton and will kill any hatching ones. Fleas are a pain to get rid of. Head lice in kids is so much easier to treat. Flea eggs can live in carpeting for about a year.
