I have a stray that has adopted us. He brought 2 of his kids to our back door and we took care of them and got them a home.

The stray now is limping around on 3 legs and has been in fights with other cats. We already have 4 cats and they are all indoors. Before he got injured he would swat at the door because one of my cats doesnt like him and he doesnt like her. Im afraid to take him in because of that. I would love to take him to the vet and get everything fixed for him but if his leg is broken he will probably require a cast of some sort right? We would have to bring him in if he had a cast on. I feel so bad for him cause of his limp and multiple injuries due to fights.

What can I do?

He definitely needs vet care. Are you able to build some sort of outdoor enclosure for him? Do you have an outbuilding you can keep him in?

well what we did is got an electric saw and cut a small portion of the gate and the side of the fence so he can freely walk through if he wants to leave our porch. I have a box with an old sweater out there for his bed.

John, it's possible that a vet would take the cat and once it's well, adopt it out to an appropriate person. It definitely needs to have that leg looked at. Call your vet and talk with them about options. Also, I will inbox you with the name of our former vet (grew up in SA) and perhaps he would be willing to help, depending on where you're located.

Also, it's a possibility that once things got situated at your house the 2 cats would work out the pecking order of the crew. Most likely, your cat and the outdoor cat were having disagreements on territory. Totally normal!

Happy Fiesta!

ok thanks

We are thinking of adopting him. Getting rid of his tape worms, having his leg checked out. I dont know how he will react to being indoors all the time. Im kinda nervous to leave him alone while im at work. Has anyone had this kinda situation about bringing in a stray with multiple cats already?

Well, personally, I think you should adopt him. I'm a bit biased, though!

Confine him to the bathroom or a spare bedroom with all the amenities while you're at work, litter box, water, food, something to sleep in (bed, old towels/blanket/comforter), and some toys to play with. Also, put a radio in there and play soft music such as classical music. If you can get one, a feliway diffuser will help, too. If you can, you can also put him in a large dog cage with a box and food/water. Drape a sheet or old blanket over one end of the cage so it's nice and darker and he can feel safe in there.

Call the vet ASAP and make an appt to get him in and checked out. It's going to be expensive because he'll probably need to have something done surgically with the leg and be neutered if he's not already. Call the vet I sent you an email about and talk to him about your situation. I know there are a couple of vets at that office, but ask for him specifically and see if he'd be willing to work out a payment option for you if you need it.

In the behavior forum, there's a thread on introducing cats. Read that and get familiar with how things should be done. Of course, depending on how social he is already will depend on how much time you'll need to keep them separated. With time, patience, and lots of TLC, I have confidence that he can be integrated successfully into your home.

actually he probably didnt have a broken leg. He is running around and not limping anymore. It was probably a fight injury

Good news, but almost a pity too IF you were going to adopt him.
It is often easier to foster in if you take them when sick or injuried. The big window opens again.

But if it is possible and feasible for you to take him in, try to do it anyway.

So it is a male, and yet had care for two kittens?? Interesting.

Good luck!
