Visualization Technique to Modify Behavior

Thread Starter
Has anyone tried visualization techniques to modify behavior? By this I mean: think about the behavior you want, talk to your cat about it, and then actually do it. When Ritz is pawing/kneading my face, I tell her "gently" and then visualize her retracting her nails into her paws (she doesn't know her nails HURT and, yes, I clip them). Sometimes it seems to work, some times not. Ditto, with her play biting (not as successful with that).
I was quite nervous about clipping her toenails, used a similar visualization technique (and told myself YES I CAN), and the whole experience bothered me more than Ritz
I'd be interested in learning about your experience(s) with this, we well as any particular visualization techniques you employ. I don't really want to modify Rtiz' behavior by squirting water or tapping her on the nose. Thanks.

I do think that explaining things to cats really works. It sounds crazy but it does work most of the time. I talk it out with them the same way you'd do with another adult or an older child. I think visualization works for the person doing the visualization, but I don't see how the cat can pick up on it.

I think that just by the tone of your voice, cats can pick up what you are communicating to them. In time they also learn to understand words like NO, love you and good kitty. Then it is a cinch to make them do what you want.
IMO visualization usually will not work because you must have their attention and cats get bored easily.
