Hello all, I'm new to the site and been doing some lurking around the site and thought I'd post. We jus adopted a 6 week old kitty and a 2 y/o cat, both absolutely gorgeous cats. I'm thinking the oldest may have an allergy, but am not quite sure to what. I been noticing that she tends to favor her eyes by squinting at times and gets alot of "eye gunk" that i have to clear up couple times a day. The rescue we got her from said that they thought it was pollen, but weren't quite positive. Is there something I could get to help clear up the situation or help her out. I will try posting pics of the kitties sometime. Thanks for the help.

First of all, have you talked to your vet about this? Have her eyes been checked for scratches or debris in the eye? If the gunk is clear, then there's no infection, which is good. If the gunk is yellow or green, then there's some kind of infection going on. Does she paw at the eye?

It's very possible that she's got seasonal allergies. Does she scratch anywhere else or is it just winky eyes? Both of my girls suffer from seasonal allergies and get weepy, itchy eyes when the weather changes.

No its darker colored eye gunk...its not yellow or green. I haven't been around her enough to really notice because I work 12 hour shifts, but my wife is around her alot and from what shes told me she's still a bit skittish and getting used to her surroundings yet because we jus picked her up 2 days ago. She's definitely got the winky eyes and thats why I kinda thought that it was allergies. As far as scratching her face or her eyes I haven't seen any of that. Is there anything for allergies they can be given to help alleviate that cause it does look kinda goofy?

On a side note she's going to the bathroom fine and loves the evo canned food. She is an incredibly affectionate cat too from when i been around her. She's not too fond of the lil kitty yet, but that'll come with time i think.

The stress of the new environment and the other cat may be contributing to the weepy eye. Do you have a Feliway diffuser or 2 running in your house? That might help alleviate the stress of the newness. Also, wiping with a warm compress/wash cloth will help keep the gunkies away. Sounds like it's just dried up eye discharge. That stuff is usually a dark brown color.

Has she been checked by the vet for any other kind of problems such as dirt/debris in eye or a scratch?

I have a cat that really gets bothered by clay litters. His eyes would get red and puffy episodes, but mostly his eyes watered. (he also coughed from it)

Is there anything you could be exposing your cat to in the home that could be doing this? Anything scented? Detergents? Possibly the litter?
