New Jersey Voters Reject Majority of School Budgets Amid Taxpayer Revolt

New Jersey voters rejected a majority of school budgets for the first time in more than three decades, defeating a record 59 percent of the plans as districts sought to raise the highest property taxes in the U.S.

Voters shot down 315 of the 537 proposals, according to the New Jersey School Boards Association. The last time more than half of the proposals failed was in 1976, when 56 percent were rejected, according to the group. Budgets were voted down yesterday in districts including Ridgewood, Edison and Teaneck.

Residents fed up with rising taxes and stung by the U.S. recession used yesterday’s elections to reject the one area of government spending over which they have a direct vote, school expenses, said Brigid Harrison, a law and science professor at Montclair State University. The results may prove a “game- changer†for Republican Governor Chris Christie as he seeks to usher his budget past the Democrat-led Legislature, she said.

“This is absolutely a clear message voters were sending that they support the governor in his efforts to shrink government spending,†Harrison said. “It’s definitely a win in the tally column for him. It was such a resounding rejection that it was actually the exception for one to pass.â€

People across America are speaking, are the "tax & spend" kings and queens in Washington listening?

Do they ever
Only Saturday, I had to ask my DH to allow a toothless, crippled old man in Reno to wash our windshield. He & his wife make only $340 each on SSI and live in a field. The man is skeletal (the wife wasn't there) No one would let him near their car - I initially felt the same way, but stopped a minute & realized that people are more important than things and figured he couldn't hurt anything. He did a great job, and my DH gave him $20 for it; another young guy, obviously a worker on a lunchbreak going to the restaurant next door gave him $5. the best part was that the old man was so happy and proud - he was getting money, not as a hand-out from us, but from EARNING it
But crashing about my head was the realization that our government is continually cutting the spending on programs for the most helpless and weakest among us, the old, the disabled, animal shelters, children. Yet the big time "haves" have unbelievable wealth for "half-hookers" and toys, vacations, etc., and all they have to do is spin propaganda that the foolish public doesn't educate themselves on, and, oh, boy
....on Sunday, I had brunch at the Furnace Creek Inn in Death Valley, and, believe me, the "haves" are doing just fine, while we are worried about the cost of food for our kids and pets, and the worn tread on our tires....

At our old office an elderly man came around once a month wanting to wash our windshields, bless his heart, I always let him.
The elderly homeless just tear your heart out. I often wonder what happened to that man.

I was at Furnace Creek last month.

Regarding the "haves," we have no way of knowing what they give or don't give.

It bugs me to pay so much on school taxes (WAY more than half of my property taxes are for the school), since I don't have kids and if I ever DO have kids, they will NOT be going to a public school under any circumstances....but I suppose it's necessary or else there won't be any such thing as public schools. I just don't know what could be done about that.
