Does anyone know of a cat-safe way to control the fly population in my garage in the warmer weather? The cats like to knock around in there while I am home (usu. several hours over the course of a day.)

My boyfriend suggested no-pest strips but I don't know if they are ok - vapor-wise - around the kitties. Obviously, I would hang them way above the cats and out of their reach.

Fly traps are a possibility but all of the reviews indicate the darn things smell like poo and garbage- not surprisingly... so I don't know if I want that in my garage. The poo, pee and garbage that comes OUT of my home is bad enough!!

Well I hang those curly sticky traps that work well. They come in a small tube and you pull to "unwind" and thumbtack up to ceiling. Note-very sticky on hands.
The other fly trap is what some people hang around horse/cow barn areas. Its a plastic jug with vents for flies to get in but not out. You fill with water and pour in the fly bait which is horribly stinky-like rotting meat. Flies love it but not for an enclosed area-too smelly!!

I would suggest those sticky tape things too. Might be a temptation for the cats though as they dangle from the ceiling teasing them.
However, I don't think they have anything harmful in them, they're just sticky and the cats probably wouldn't want it if they did get ahold of one.

I buy these fly traps at Wal-Mart.They have a plastic bag attached to aventilation/hanger thing. There's bait in the bag and you cut out a small circle of plastic off the top, pull the yellow top up,add water to the line on the bag,and hang them up.I don't use them in the house...afraid the bait might smell...but they may be okay for a garage.I use them on my front porch and around the back door and they work very well. The flies go in and never come back out.Periodically thru the summer I throw them out and put a new one up.Here they run around.$3.50.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am trying to think where I could hang a stinky fly trap that won't be a problem smell-wise. The flies are usually around in the garage and the garbage cans.

The fly paper (sticky) strips are a possibility - but my garage is unique in that it is a two-story vaulted ceiling.

My concern with a pesticide strip is two-fold - one - that the vapor would be harmful to my cats and two - that they would eat the flies killed by the chemical and get sick that way.
