Friday was not a good day for one of my co-workers. It was not a good day for me either.

As some of you know, I work for a student loan company. We also handle disability discharge for the Dept of Ed student loans.

Well, Friday morning, there was an incident where one of our reps was talking to a guy in NH about his student loan discharge case. He became upset and said he was going to kill himself. She then heard a loud shot, a liquid sound and then someone/something fall. She put him on hold and called me, not knowing what to do. I notified my sup who then notified management. They called 911 here and was put in touch with 911 there.

We don't know he actually killed himself or not. They had to send the poor girl home and I had to leave for a couple of hours myself as we were all so upset. She didn't come to work today either.

I talked to my sup this morning but he hadn't heard anything. We are all hoping that this is someone's idea of a cruel and sick joke and not the actual thing.

My co-worker could use some vibes and prayers to get over this. I was extremely upset by it and I still am but I cannot imagine what she must be feeling, to have actually been on the phone when he did this.

Lots of for your co-worker.

I don't know a whole lot about situations like this, but from what I do know about shooting (I've been doing it for many, many years) and how ballistics and all that works, as well as watching and reading way too much true crime/forensics shows...IMO, this was a prank by a desperate guy willing to do anything to get out of his loan. OK, not quite anything but pretending to do anything.

If you could differentiate the loud bang then a liquid sound then someone falling, he was doing what he thought it would sound like. (This is going to sound gross, so bear with me...) If the gun was pointed at someone's head where there would be any liquid/matter on the headset, the phone would most likely be destroyed before the sound would even transmit. Even if it wasn't destroyed, the muscles of the arm & hand would relax and drop the phone immediately. If it was pointed in any other direction (where it wouldn't destroy the phone), there would be no liquid sound. So basically (and I could be wrong here, I'm not a crime scene re-creationist) there's no way you would hear any kind of liquid sound if this were real. Perhaps a bang/fall, but no liquid.

I'm going to assume you have the guy's address and called out the police, right?

How horrible. I'm no expert either, but am inclined to believe Heidi's right about sequence of events, and therefore that he was "just" messing with you guys. But boy! that sure was messing with you. Many many for you and your co-workers!

for you and your co-worker! Let's hope it was just all a big sick joke...and even if it wasn't, it wasn't anyone's fault...

The VP of our office called 911 here who patched them to 911 there. We had all his info, address, phone number, SSN, DOB.... the whole thing.

We haven't heard a thing about what was found.

I am sorry either one of you had to go through this. Vibes to both of you. You all did everything you could for this person. I really hope all this person did was scare you guys. It stinks that someone would do that as a joke. It would be a good idea for someone to check in with your co-worker to make sure she is ok. I hope both of you are able to get some counseling to help deal with this situation if you choose to. I know this is easier said then done but if this guy did actually do something I hope both of you can realize that you did not do anything to cause this. Perhaps your VP can find a way to follow-up on this situation so that everyone has some closure.

Since you have that much info, it would probably be easy to at least look at that area's news coverage and local paper to see if anything serious did happen.
